China has banned advertisements during dramas and movies on television in the Communist party's latest move to assert control over the country's increasingly commercial media industry.

The rules, which come into effect in January, ban TV stations from running ads during films and drama episodes that run for 45 minutes or more. Analysts said they could slow the world's fastest-growing big advertising market next year, as the party's media campaign starts to have a commercial impact, or divert TV ad budgets to other media.

The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, an arm of the propaganda department, has over the past two years stepped up its meddling in TV networks' operations. In 2010, it cut the amount of commercials stations could broadcast in prime time by a quarter. This year, it has pushed networks to cut entertainment programming in favour of morally edifying shows.

Earlier this year, the regulator forced Hunan TV, China's most commercially successful provincial broadcaster, to take "Supergirl", the nation's first and most successful talent show, off the air. Officials told the broadcaster that entertainment should take a back seat to "values, responsibility and quality".

In a key policy document passed last month, the Communist party pledged "cultural system reform" and said it wanted both to have market forces drive the media industry and for the party to control it.

The regulator explained its latest move with the desire to implement the leadership's decision, and "to fully utilise the TV networks to build a public cultural service system, raise the quality of public cultural services and guarantee the people's basic cultural rights".

Analysts said the new rules could throw the industry into disarray. Zhao Yihe, head of research at Charm Communications, one of China's leading advertising agencies, said they were "not going to be a lethal blow" to TV stations, but that they would hurt their ability to make money.

"I expect this to shave one or two percentage points off the growth rate of TV advertising next year, which we originally forecast to be about 15 per cent," said Mr Zhao. GroupM, the world's largest media investment management group, predicts that China's television ad spending will hit Rmb201bn ($31.4bn) this year, up 13 per cent from last year.

However, Seth Grossman, managing director of Carat China, said the Aegis-owned media agency had not changed its 11.8 per cent growth forecast for the whole Chinese ad market in 2012 because advertisers were likely to move money to other Chinese media.

"The first impact will be on [TV ad] pricing. China is still a very high demand environment, and that's a classic inflationary pressure. This doesn't take money out of the Chinese advertising market. It will go elsewhere," he said, predicting benefits for local television channels, online video outlets and outdoor advertising companies.

Domestic companies are the biggest spenders on Chinese TV ads, but some foreign brands like Nike, Toyota, Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble and Sony are also present. Mr Zhao said the new regulations would create short term chaos as TV networks renegotiate advertising slots that were auctioned off as recently as this month.

French Former First Lady Mitterrand Dies At 87

PARIS (AP) — Well before the Occupy movement took on Wall Street, the former first lady of France, Danielle Mitterrand, was leading the charge against capitalist excess.

"Everybody knows that the foundation of the system today is money: Money is the guru, money decides everything … That's why we are working to get out of this system," she told RTL radio last month, summing up a lifelong cause in one of her last interviews before her death Tuesday at 87.

Such resistance defined the life of Mitterrand, the widow of France's first Socialist president, Francois Mitterrand.

At age 19, with World War II raging, she went underground in the Burgundy hills with the French Resistance. She was awarded the Croix de Guerre for her work against the Nazi occupation of France and met her future husband, who had joined up under the code name "Francois Morland."

That union eventually gave her a bully pulpit — during Francois' 14 years as president — that she used to advocate for many left-leaning causes. She supported Marxist rebels in El Salvador, ethnic minorities such as Kurds and Tibetans and vociferously opposed capitalist excess.

They also had three sons together, one of whom, Pascal, died at a young age.

Danielle Mitterrand died before dawn after being hospitalized at Georges Pompidou hospital in Paris in recent days for fatigue, her foundation France Libertes said.

As first lady, Mitterrand shucked the tradition of her predecessors who largely kept to the background. In a 1986 interview with The Associated Press, her blue eyes flashed at the suggestion she resembled a high-profile American first lady.

"There is no traditional role" for a first lady, Mitterrand said. "Each woman has her own personality and … acts according to her conscience and her sensibilities."

Yet in contrast to her outspoken approach to politics, she kept quiet for years about one aspect of her personal life: a secret relationship her husband had had with Anne Pingeot, a museum curator 28 years his junior and the mother of his long-secret daughter, Mazarine Pingeot.

He died of cancer less than a year after leaving office in 1995. In an especially poignant moment in French politics, the widowed Danielle stood before the late president's coffin alongside his mistress and daughter, whose out-of-wedlock birth and existence were long kept from the French public.

Her foundation said Danielle Mitterrand found guidance in a phrase of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre: "It's not right to want to heal the suffering of people without committing to fight the very causes of this suffering."

She created several charities and crisscrossed the world in defense of human rights. She once even kissed Cuba's revolutionary Fidel Castro at a residence for visiting dignitaries near the presidential Elysee Palace.

Mitterrand urged worldwide unity to "put an end to economic and financial dictatorship, the henchman of political dictators. Finally, they seem to be shaken by the anger of peoples."

"Of course, the world revolves around the Dow Jones, the Nikkei stock index or the CAC 40 (French stock index). … But all around the world, little voices are being raised to say that man is unhappy even if the stock market is doing well," Mitterrand told Le Figaro newspaper in 1996.

Thirteen years ago, Mitterrand visited in prison Mumia Abu-Jamal, a former Black Panther who has spent nearly 30 years on death row over his 1982 conviction for killing a white police officer in Philadelphia.

And in 2008, Mitterrand denounced American support for foes of Bolivia's leftist president Evo Morales, and accused "fascist gangs" of intimidating native peoples in the South American country.

France Libertes, whose focus has been human rights and had recently made a top priority of getting drinking water to those without it around the world, said Mitterrand left behind "a message of hope."

Praise and appreciation for her poured in from across France's political spectrum Tuesday.

President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said: "Neither the setback or the victory caused her to deviate from the road she had laid for herself: giving a hearing to the voice of those that no one wanted to hear."

Her nephew Frederic Mitterrand, who now serves as culture minister in Sarkozy's conservative government, told BFM TV that his aunt "did a lot to humanize the role of first ladies."

Danielle Emilienne Isabelle Gouze was born Oct. 29, 1924 in Verdun, a town in northeastern France known as one of World War I's biggest killing fields.

Under the Nazi collaborationist Vichy regime during World War II, her father, a Socialist-leaning school principal, lost his job after refusing a state order to list all Jewish students and teachers for authorities, according to Mitterrand's foundation.

In March 1944, she took her own stand and joined the Resistance.

She is survived by sons Gilbert and Jean-Christophe. A burial service is planned Saturday in the eastern town of Cluny, her foundation said.

Last year more than 9100 million tons of CO2 were emitted into the atmosphere. The reaction by the media in Germany today has been one of utter horror.

Alone in China and India CO2 emissions emissions climbed 10 percent."

Legendary filmmaker Agnes Varda takes digital camcorder in hand and roams about the French countryside in search of "gleaners." An age-old practice, as depicted in Millet's famous painting, performed traditionally by peasant women, gleaners scavenged the remains of a crop after the harvest. Varda finds their modern-day equivalent collecting rejected potatoes outside of Lyon, fallen apples in Provence, and refuse in the markets of Paris. Along the way, she talks to a man sporting yellow rubber boots who has lived on trash for ten years, a gourmet chef who gleans for his restaurant, a homeless doctorate in biology who teaches literacy courses to immigrants for free, a couple of artists who use trash in their work, and the grandson of early cinema innovator Étienne-Jules Marey. Along the way, Varda discusses heart-shaped potatoes, big trucks on the highway, the waste of consumerism, and the ravages of time. This film was screened at the 2000 Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals.

''The Gleaners and I'' takes its title, and some of its inspiration, from an 1867 painting by Jean-Francois Millet that shows three women in a wheat field, stooping to pick up sheaves and kernels left behind after the harvest. The image is well known; it appears in the Larousse Dictionary of the French Language alongside the definition of the verb ''glaner'' (to glean). The painting itself, which hangs in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, shows up early in Agnes Varda's wonderful new documentary, thronged by camera-wielding tourists.

The painting -- or, more accurately, the activity it depicts -- sent Ms. Varda, a warm, intrepid woman in her early 70's and one of the bravest, most idiosyncratic of French filmmakers, on a tour of her own. From September 1999 until May of this year, she crisscrossed the French countryside with a hand-held digital video camera and a small production crew, in search of people who scavenge in potato fields, apple orchards and vineyards, as well as in urban markets and curbside trash depositories. Some are motivated by desperate need, others by disgust at the wastefulness all around them and others by an almost mystical desire to make works of art out of things -- castoff dolls, old refrigerators, windshield wipers -- that have been thrown away without a second thought.

Ms. Varda, their patient interlocutor, also sees herself as a gleaner in her own right. (The film's French title, ''Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse,'' makes this plain.) She plucks images and stories from the world around her, finding beauty and nourishment in lives and activities the world prefers to ignore. She is a constant, funny presence in the film, providing piquant voice-over narration and allowing herself visual and verbal digressions on the state of her aging hands, the water damage on her ceiling and her portable camera's dancing lens cap.

She is also an indefatigably curious, skeptical and sympathetic observer. ''The Gleaners and I'' is both a diary and a kind of extended essay on poverty, thrift and the curious place of scavenging in French history and culture. The patrons of a provincial bar explain the difference between gleaning and picking; a magistrate in black robes stands in a cabbage field and cites the section of the French penal code (Article R-26.10) and the royal edict of Nov. 2, 1554, that establish the right to glean. This bureaucratic side of the national temperament is also embodied by an apple farmer who explains the system he has developed for registering and licensing those who wish to gather his unharvested fruit.

For all its gentle humor -- there is a hilarious dispute about just how many oysters one is allowed to gather after a storm -- Ms. Varda's film uncovers a subterranean world of poverty and loneliness in the midst of plenty. An elderly peasant woman recalls the old days, when, as in Millet's painting, gleaning was a communal activity, festive and sociable even as it was backbreaking. Now, Ms. Varda notes, people scavenge alone, and they gather not only agricultural surplus but supermarket trash as well.

And yet ''The Gleaners and I'' is never depressing. Even at their most desperate -- a former truck driver, fired for drinking on the job, who lives in a shabby trailer; a group of disaffected young people who vandalize hulking trash bins -- Ms. Varda's gleaners retain a resilient, generous humanity that is clearly brought to the surface by her own tough, open spirit.

The film is studded with found metaphors and serendipitous insights, like the collection of heart-shaped potatoes Ms. Varda brings home from her travels. They're coarse, homely objects, misshapen and flecked with dirt, unmarketable in the view of the potato growers. But their poetic value is self-evident. ''I'm something of a leftover myself,'' Ms. Varda remarked to journalists covering the New York Film Festival, where ''The Gleaners and I'' will be shown tomorrow night. This was a charming bit of modesty. She's a treasure.

In Agnes Varda's documentary The Gleaners & I (a more literal translation from the original French would be "The Gleaners & The Gleaner", or even "The Gleaneress") play, investigation, and contemplation are all intricately yet loosely wound together – each element distinct yet forming an unpretentiously ambitious whole, much like the found-object artworks Varda highlights throughout. Her subject, as you might have gathered (no pun intended), is gleaning: in all its forms. We are introduced to the classical gleaners, the peasant women who would follow the harvest by crouching and stooping through the fields, rummaging for leftovers once the more illustrious agricultural bounty was carried off. We see such gleaners in famous French paintings, and meet one or two who reminisce only – it seems that this more traditional form of gleaning has fallen by the wayside: mechanized reaping has become too precise and so few crops are left behind these days. This we learn in the first five minutes of the 90-minute film; what follows is an eager, inquisitive investigation of gleaning in all its latter-day manifestations…

We travel back and forth across France "capturing" passing trucks; shuffle through potato wastelands alongside single mothers and homeless alcoholics; observe running legal commentaries offered by robed justices standing incongruously in vineyards and in trash heaps. We see gleaners in vineyards, along the seashore, on city streets; meet various artists who incorporate abandoned junk into their own work; visit a children's museum which makes trash shiny and colorful. Finally we discover a post-graduate gleaner who picks through garbage to find food, his eccentricity giving way to erudite pedagogy when it's revealed that he teaches French to Senegalese immigrants, free of charge, of his own volition. Those are the gleaners – what of "I" (or as the original title puts it, the gleaner – singular)? She's Varda, of course, perpetually playing peekaboo with her own camera, narrating with a mixture of carefree bravado, pensive reflection, and endless fascination. Much, if not most, of what we see is filmed by her, so even when we aren't hearing or seeing her, she's present – the video filters her vision and consciousness, which together filter the outside world for us.

The lo-fi visuals are at once liberating and relatively nondescript – they do not carry the punch of celluloid, the automatic "magic", but they do convey a quiet, gentle charm, a looseness that is more observational and in some ways more sensitive than traditional filmmaking allows. This highlights the distinction between what is captured and how Varda captures it (the raw material of reality and the way she selects, composes, edits, comments upon, and interacts with what we see). This formal component provides a nice rhyme for the film's thematic material, in which utilitarian consumer goods are given aesthetic rebirth, waste is turned into food, and trash becomes personalized and beautiful. The aesthetic becomes practical, the practical becomes aesthetic, and the useless finds its uses – or rather has them found for it. Right away, the movie presents an awareness of beauty's ambiguity, opening not just with footage of gleaners at work, but gleaners glamorized, in the paintings of Millet and Breton. (Following a grim episode focusing on the dire poverty of some gleaners, there's a moment of reflection in Burgundy for Van der Weyden's "The Last Judgement", and briefly the film is haunted by the pitiable writhing of the damned.)

In presenting those works of art that commemorate gleaning, Varda seems aware that such paintings tend to romanticize what can be a very hard way of living – and yet to deny the beauty of these paintings would be absurd, and self-defeating. Varda's own filmmaking style, an engaging combination of doc and home movie, strikes an ongoing, fragile balance between respect for those she is filming and an almost naive sense of wonder; in both cases, curiosity serves her, and us, best. We draw our own conclusions without feeling that she has concealed her own point of view from us – or, at the same time, that her own point of view is necessarily any more fixed than our own. At times metatextual (but very, very playfully so), the movie – shot on a video camera at the turn-of-the-millennium – seems a synthesis of various documentary traditions, stretching all the way back to Etienne-Jules Marey, whose "chronophotography" was a forerunner of the cinema. (Marey's great grandson owns a vineyard which Varda visits, examining both his sympathetic treatment of gleaners and curation of a museum honoring his ancestor.)

Indeed, Varda has "gleaned" all the documentary techniques and approaches of the past hundred years: the personal diary, the man-on-the-street interview, the verite observation, the didactic montage, the found footage, the expert fact-finding interview – and all viewpoints are explored, political, personal, social, aesthetic alike. And what frames all of this borrowing, what gives it its own life, is Varda's use of the video camera – the way she filters all these devices through the humble yet infinitely resonant context of home moviemaking. (She even includes an accidentally-filmed "dance of the lens cap"; while some find such indulgence bizarre and laughable, many of us will find it charming, particularly those who recognize the complex framework within which such proudly amateurish moments are allowed to flourish.) To the extent the film has a "message" – generally it's more subtle and rich than that – it is an encouragement of this sort of personal gleaning; The Gleaners & I spurs us on to open our eyes and see the potential of society's refuse, the spiritual in the material, even as we are discouraged from ignoring the darker undertones of prettified consciousness. By the end of the film, encouraged by Varda's own highly individual, yet "open" perspective, that "I" in the title could be us as well

No fruit left behind

Two years ago, April Lee and Chetan Mangat were living in Honolulu and two experiences led them to create their new online produce exchange GoGlean.org. One night they saw Agnès Varda's film The Gleaners and I (a look at harvesting—as former agrarian duty and modern urban survival). It also happened to be mango season. They saw the irony of $2 Costa Rican mangoes being sold in a town where yardfuls of fruit were rotting.

"There are so many mangoes going to waste," said Lee by phone from Cambridge, where she is a student at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. "Then you go to markets and you expect to see local produce and for whatever reason you see imported fruits. It makes sense to create an online forum managed by the public. You supply them with the tool to connect them with each other."

The website is like a craigslist for fresh food. You open an account, and let people know what you have and where they can get it. Right now there are a couple of farmers on there, but a lot of the notices are for "found" fruit—people disclosing where the wild things are, such as "berries that look like blueberries" in Brooklyn's McCarren Park, or strawberry guavas on the loop trail in Keaiwa Heiau State Park. I don't know about you, but I don't want an hour hike to turn into a fruitless search. That's some lean gleaning. People also put out the word on more accessible pickins—April let people know about a treefull of "almost ripe pears spotted on the north/east side of the parking lot of Trader Joe's in Cambridge."

But as word spreads, site users may be finding themselves in situations more like the good ol' days portrayed in Vargas' documentary. "Chetan's been talking with farmers in New York, and they're keen on him going back to the original idea of connecting farmers with people," said Lee. "If people can take farmers' surplus it will be mutually beneficial for people and farmers, as farmers don't have to then get rid of the leftovers."

Lee and Mangat are the type of people who think nothing of cooking for hours for a houseful of people—some of whom they might not even know—and do it with genuine smiles. They offer GoGlean as a community service.

"We want people who want the food to get involved," says Lee, no matter where they are. If you happen to be going to Brazil soon, through GoGlean, you know you can get free surplus seasonal fruits and vegetables from Fazenda Armengue in Trancoso, Bahia. Lee knew Fazenda Armengue owner Rich Rossmassler when he ran Geneva, New York-based Red Jacket Orchards' greenmarket program in New York City.

Lee, originally from Honolulu, worked at the Honolulu Academy of Arts (where she was my colleague) as curator of special projects before moving to Los Angeles' Hammer Museum for a stint as a curatorial assistant. In Cambridge she is also studying at MIT's Media Laboratory. Mangat, who hails from India and makes his home in Brooklyn, founded Blank & Co., where his clients include the shop The Reed Space and Zing Magazine.

"We both are kind of involved in the possibilities of new media technology for community participation," says Lee. Along with GoGlean, Mangat has also developed the project The Labelmakers, an online effort to "allow every citizen to be actively involved in how we label our foods."

Overzealous cleaner ruins £690,000 artwork that she thought was dirty

She scoured off a layer of paint in a sculpture by late German artist Martin Kippenberger on loan to a museum in Dortmund

The artwork, entitled When It Starts Dripping From The Ceiling, consists of a trough under a wooden tower of slats.An overzealous cleaner in Germany has ruined a piece of modern art worth £690,000 after mistaking it for an eyesore that needed a good scrub.

The sculpture by the German artist Martin Kippenberger, widely regarded as one of the most talented artists of his generation until his death in 1997, had been on loan to the Ostwall Museum in Dortmund when it fell prey to the cleaner's scouring pad.

The work, called When It Starts Dripping From the Ceiling (Wenn's anfängt durch die Decke zu tropfen), comprised a rubber trough placed underneath a rickety wooden tower made from slats. Inside the trough, Kippenberger had spread a layer of paint representing dried rainwater. He thought it was art: the cleaner saw it as a challenge, and set about making the bucket look like new.

A spokeswoman for the museum told German media that the female cleaner "removed the patina from the four walls of the trough".

"It is now impossible to return it to its original state," she said, adding that it had been on loan to the museum from a private collector and was valued by insurers at €800,000 (£690,000).

She said that cleaning crews had been told to keep 20cm (8in) away from artworks, but it was unclear if the woman – who worked for a company to which cleaning had been outsourced – had received the memo.

If Kippenberger is now turning in his grave, he may find solace in the fact that he is not the only artist to have his works ruined by cleaners. In 1986, a "grease stain" by Joseph Beuys valued at about €400,000 was mopped away at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.

At least the artwork didn't end up in a skip. In 2004, a cleaner at Tate Britain in London threw away*** part of a work by another German artist, Gustav Metzger, after mistaking it for rubbish. The cleaner failed to realise that a plastic bag containing discarded paper and cardboard was an integral part of Recreation of First Public Demonstration of Auto-Destructive Art, and not just some litter. The bag was later recovered, but it was too damaged to display, so Metzger replaced it with another bag.

Germans are not the only victims. In 2001, Damien Hirst lost a pile of beer bottles, ashtrays and coffee cups, meant to represent the life of an artist, when a caretaker at the Eyestorm Gallery in London cleared it away###.

A bag of rubbish that was part of a Tate Britain work of art has been accidentally thrown away by a cleaner.

The bag filled with discarded paper and cardboard was part of a work by Gustav Metzger, said to demonstrate the "finite existence" of art.

It was thrown away by a cleaner at the London gallery, which subsequently retrieved the damaged bag.

The 78-year-old artist replaced it with a new bag. The gallery would not reveal whether he would be compensated.

'Integral part'

The bag was part of Metzger's Recreation of First Public Demonstration of Auto-Destructive Art, a copy of a piece he produced in 1960.

Tate Britain said the work "is made up of several elements, one of which is a rubbish bag included by the artist as an integral part of the installation".

"On 30 June, the bag was accidentally removed and damaged but was subsequently replaced."

The gallery said the work is now covered over at night so it cannot be removed again, and staff have been made aware that the rubbish bag is part of the exhibit.

Metzger, a German artist who lives in east London, invented "auto-destructive" art in 1959.

The work also features an "acid painting" - nylon covered in acid which slowly destroys it to illustrate the transient nature of paintings, sculptures and other artworks.

It is part of the gallery's Art and the 60s exhibition, which looks at art after 1956 and also includes works by David Hockney and Peter Blake.

It is not the first time such a mistake has been made. In 2001 a cleaner at a London's Eyestorm Gallery gallery cleared away an installation by artist Damien Hirst, having mistaken it for a pile of rubbish.

The collection of beer bottles, coffee cups and overflowing ashtrays was said to represent the chaos of an artist's studio.

And in the 1980s the work of Joseph Beuys, which featured a very dirty bath, was scrubbed clean by a gallery worker in Germany.

###Cleaner clears up Hirst's ashtray art

Emmanuel Asare thought the piles of full ashtrays, half-filled coffee cups, empty beer bottles and newspapers strewn across the gallery were the remnants of a party in the west London gallery.

Although that is what it was, this rubbish had been arranged by Hirst into an impromptu installation, which increased its value by thousands.

Hirst had arrived at the launch party of a new exhibition of his work, Painting-By-Numbers, on Tuesday night at the Eyestorm gallery. When asked how he would like his prints to be displayed in the windows, the artist, famed for his formaldehyde animals, decided to create a new work.

The next morning when Mr Asare arrived for work, he decided to clean up the mess straight away by putting it all in bin bags. Mr Asare said: "As soon as I clapped eyes on it I sighed because there was so much mess.

"I didn't think for a second that it was a work of art - it didn't look much like art to me. So I cleared it all into binbags and dumped it."

Staff were dispatched to find the binbags in the rubbish, and salvaged the various objects, which they used to reconstruct the installation from photographs taken earlier.

Hirst, 35, said the piles of junk represented an artist's studio and said the mistake was "fantastic. Very funny."

Charles Thomson, co-founder of the Stuckist art movement, which favours the traditional skills of drawing and painting, praised Mr Asare's action.

"The cleaner obviously ought to be promoted to an art critic of a national newspaper. He clearly has a fine critical eye and can spot rubbish, just as the child could see that the emperor wasn't wearing any new clothes," he said.

Manufactured by Ceylor, the 'Hotshot' is a narrower condom with a tight band at the opening to ensure that it remains on the boy's penis during intercourse. A standard condom has a diameter of 2 inches (5.2 cm) whereas the Hotshot has a diameter of 1.7 inches (4.5 cm). Both are the same length – 7.4 inches (19 cm).

Male condoms are usually packaged inside a foil wrapper, in a rolled-up form, and are designed to be applied to the tip of the penis and then unrolled over the erect penis. It is important that some space be left in the tip of the condom so that semen has a place to collect; otherwise it may be forced out of the base of the device. After use, it is recommended the condom be wrapped in tissue or tied in a knot, then disposed of in a trash receptacle.

Some couples find that putting on a condom interrupts sex, although others incorporate condom application as part of their foreplay. Some men and women find the physical barrier of a condom dulls sensation. AFRICA, KENYA - Mzee Kimani Maruge in class as a teacher marks his book. Mzee Kimani Maruge was the Oldest Student to enrol in Primary school until his death in August 2009 of stomach cancer.

Kimani Ng'ang'a Maruge (c. 1920 - August 14, 2009) holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest person to start primary school—he enrolled in the first grade on January 12th 2004, aged 84. Although he had no papers to prove his age, Maruge believed he was born in 1920.

Maruge attended Kapkenduiywo Primary School in Eldoret, Kenya; he said that the government's announcement of universal and free elementary education in 2003 prompted him to enroll.

In 2005 Maruge, who was a model student, was elected head boy of his school.

In September 2005, Maruge boarded a plane for the first time in his life, and headed to New York City to address the United Nations Millennium Development Summit on the importance of free primary education

He was a combatant in the Mau Mau Uprising against the British colonizers in the 1950s.

Maruge's property was stolen during the 2007-2008 post-election violence, and he contemplated quitting school. During early 2008 he lived in a refugee camp, where he was reportedly a minor celebrity, four kilometers from his school, but still attended classes every day. In June 2008, he relocated to the capital Nairobi.

In June 2008, Maruge was forced to withdraw from school and relocate to a retirement home for senior citizens. However, soon after, on June 10, 2008, Maruge enrolled once again into grade 6 at the Marura primary school, located in the Kariobangi area of Nairobi.

Feature film The First Grader

A film about Kimani Maruge, starring Oliver Litondo and Naomie Harris titled The First Grader, is set to be released on May 13, 2011. The British-produced film was shot on location in the Rift Valley in Kenya, despite earlier reports that it would be filmed in South Africa.

Director Justin Chadwick said: "We could have shot it in South Africa, but Kenya has this unbelievable, inexplicable energy - inherent in the children, and the people we were making the film about"

When Mzee Kimani Ng'ang'a Maruge burst into public limelight when he enrolled for primary school education at the age of 84 in 2004, many dismissed it as a bad joke and a public stunt driven too far. But when this great-grandfather finally departed to his grave on August 14, 2009 of stomach cancer at the Cheshire Home for the Aged in Kariobangi North, Nairobi, he not only left a sweeping legacy that defied the odds in education and proved to many that it's never too late to salvage a dream, but had his name firmly inscribed in the coveted Guinness World Record for being the oldest person to start primary school.

Maruge, who believed he was born in 1920, attended Kapkenduiywo Primary School in Eldoret, Kenya. His trials to go to school before had proved fruitless. His renewed interest in education, he said, was as a result of the government's decision to provide free primary education. While in school, Maruge commanded the respect of his classmates (grandchildren) and teachers and abode by the school rules and regulations. His socks were always pulled to the base of his knees, his hair was always well kempt and he reported to school early and frequent enough. With such discipline, he was made a prefect in the school. The 2007-2008 post-election violence that hit Kenya did not spare the old man. His property was stolen and his house in the Rift Valley was burnt down in the violence and he found himself living at an agricultural showground housing 14,000 displaced people, before he was later moved to the home for the aged. But even with such difficult situations, he continued with his hard work and swore to pursue university education. A veteran of Kenya's 1950s Mau Mau independence movement, Mr. Maruge said he was inspired to start learning when he suspected a preacher was misinterpreting the Bible. 'Mzee' Maruge also said he wanted to learn to count the money he was expecting to receive in compensation from the authorities for fighting against the British during the Mau Mau uprising. In September 2005, Maruge boarded a plane for the first time in his life, in a UN-sponsored trip to New York, simply the highlight of his life. Maruge addressed the United Nations Millennium Development Summit on the importance of free primary education and called on world leaders at the summit to make education for the poor a priority. On Sunday May 24, 2009 the father-of-five was baptised at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kariobangi and took a Christian name, Stephen. Maruge died on August 14 aged 90, at the Chesire Home for the aged in Kariobangi North, where he was staying, from complications of stomach cancer. He was aged 89 and was buried in his farm in Subukia, Rift Valley Province, Kenya. In his everlasting quest for more knowledge, Mzee Maruge left many in urgent need to rethink education and not take it for granted.

Every year in Bangladesh 75 million episodes of diarrhoeal diseases occur that results in approximately 110,000 deaths. The Government of Bangladesh alone spends US$80 million per annum in addressing this problem. One of the key reasons for the high incidence of diarrhoeal diseases is the use of contaminated water.

ICDDR,B conducted a study to evaluate the synergistic action of alum potash, bleaching powder and lime to purify contaminated surface water for drinking purpose. These disinfectants used individually do not purify the water to an acceptable limit. Dr. Sirajul Islam and his team in the Laboratory Science Division invented the Siraj Mixture - a precise combination of alum potash, bleaching powder and lime, which can purify 15 litres of surface water (enough to fill a traditional clay pitcher used in rural Bangladesh) from a pond, river, lake or canal within 30 minutes to meet the minimum WHO standard for drinking. The ingredients of the mixture cost only BDT 0.35 = 0.5 cent US

The use of this mixture to purify surface water is simple, easy and inexpensive, and it can be used by anyone, anywhere without any special equipment or training. Siraj Mixture is especially useful during natural disasters like floods as well as in areas where ground water is contaminated with arsenic. The Government of Bangladesh may save million of dollars every year providing Siraj Mixture for the treatment of contaminated water, thus avoiding the loss of thousands of lives. Indirect costs including losses in productivity (absenteeism) and loss of productive years of life as a consequence of premature deaths will also be saved. This research into safer drinking water therefore has an impact on achieving all the health related Millennium Development Goals in Bangladesh.

Background: In Bangladesh, 75 million episodes and 110,000 deaths occur due to diarrhoeal diseases every year, and US$ 80 million is spent for treatment alone by the Government of Bangladesh. The main reason for the high incidence of diarrhoeal diseases is mainly contaminated water. Objective: To reduce the incidence of diarrhoeal diseases in rural communities in Bangladesh by using Siraj Mixture (a newly-developed water-purifying agent) as point-of-use water treatment strategy. Methodology: Siraj Mixture is a combination of alum potash, bleaching powder, and lime. A pilot study was conducted in 10,000 people in Matlab from May to December 2006. Siraj Mixture was provided to 210 households each in study and control population. In the study households, in addition to Siraj Mixture, H2S kit was supplied to test water before and after treatment with the mixture to monitor contamination. The incidence of diarrhoeal diseases in both study and control households was monitored using ICDDR,B hospital records. Results: Not a single patient was admitted with diarrhoea in ICDDR,B hospital from the families who used Siraj Mixture during the study period (2006) but, at the same time in 2005, there were 8 cases from the same families. During the same period from May to December (2005), there were 29 cases from the neighbouring households which increased to 50 cases in 2006. On the 20th week of the study, 46 and 29 families of the study and control population respectively shifted from tubewell water to treated surface water for drinking purpose due to arsenic contamination in tubewell water. There was no significant difference in the use of Siraj Mixture (t=0.4232, df=43.5, p=0.6742) between the study and control populations. Conclusion: The Government of Bangladesh may save thousands of lives and millions of dollars every year providing Siraj Mixture for treating contaminated water. Indirect costs, including losses in productivity (absenteeism) and loss of productive years of life as a consequence of premature deaths, will also be saved. Therefore, this study will have an impact on achieving Millennium Development Goal (MGD) in Bangladesh.

With spiralling fuel prices it is about time we heard some breakthrough!

India's largest automaker, Tata Motors, is set to start producing the world's first commercial air-powered vehicle.

The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer Guy re for Luxembourg-based MDI, uses compressed air, as opposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internal-combustion models, to push its engine's pistons. Some 6000 zero-emissions Air Cars are scheduled to hit Indian streets by August 2011.

The Air Car, called the "MiniCAT" could cost around Rs. 3,475,225 ($8,177.00) in India and would have a range of around 300 km between refuels.

The cost of a refill would be about Rs. 85 ($2.00)

The MiniCAT which is a simple, light urban car, with a tubular chassis that is glued, not welded, and a body of fiberglass powered by compressed air. Microcontrollers are used in every device in the car, so one tiny radio transmitter sends instructions to the lights, indicators, etc.

There are no keys - just an access card which can be read by the car from your pocket. According to the designers, it costs less than 50 rupees per 100 Km (about a tenth that of a petrol car). Its mileage is about double that of the most advanced electric car (200 to 300 km or 10 hours of driving), a factor which makes a perfect choice in cities where 80% of motorists drive at less than 60 Km. The car has a top speed of 105 Kmph.

Refilling the car will, once the market develops, take place at adapted petrol stations to administer compressed air In two or three minutes, and at a cost of approximately 100 rupees, the car will be ready to go another 200-300 kilometers.

As a viable alternative, the car carries a small compressor which can be connected to the mains (220V or 380V) and refill the tank in 3-4 hours. Due to the absence of combustion and, consequently, of residues, changing the oil (1 litre of vegetable oil) is necessary only every 50,000 Km).
The temperature of the clean air expelled by the exhaust pipe is between 0-15 degrees below zero, which makes it suitable for use by the internal air conditioning system with no need for gases or loss of power.

Another Fukushima in the making?

LACEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Federal regulators have been working closely with the nuclear power industry to keep the nation's aging reactors operating within safety standards by repeatedly weakening those standards, or simply failing to enforce them, an investigation by The Associated Press has found.

Time after time, officials at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission have decided that original regulations were too strict, arguing that safety margins could be eased without peril, according to records and interviews.

The result? Rising fears that these accommodations by the NRC are significantly undermining safety - and inching the reactors closer to an accident that could harm the public and jeopardize the future of nuclear power in the United States.

Examples abound. When valves leaked, more leakage was allowed - up to 20 times the original limit. When rampant cracking caused radioactive leaks from steam generator tubing, an easier test of the tubes was devised, so plants could meet standards.

Failed cables. Busted seals. Broken nozzles, clogged screens, cracked concrete, dented containers, corroded metals and rusty underground pipes - all of these and thousands of other problems linked to aging were uncovered in the AP's yearlong investigation. And all of them could escalate dangers in the event of an accident.

...Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Lacey Township, N.J. Called "Oyster Creak" by some critics because of its aging problems, this boiling water reactor began running in 1969 and ranks as the country's oldest operating commercial nuclear power plant. Its license was extended in 2009 until 2029, though utility officials announced in December 2010 that they'll shut the reactor 10 years earlier, rather than build state-ordered cooling towers.

The water is needed to cool the reactor in an emergency. A leak in the system forced the plant to go offline for repairs later that year.

Yet despite the many problems linked to aging, not a single official body in government or industry has studied the overall frequency and potential impact on safety of such breakdowns in recent years, even as the NRC has extended the licenses of dozens of reactors.

Industry and government officials defend their actions, and insist that no chances are being taken. But the AP investigation found that with billions of dollars and 19 percent of America's electricity supply at stake, a cozy relationship prevails between the industry and its regulator, the NRC.

Records show a recurring pattern: Reactor parts or systems fall out of compliance with the rules. Studies are conducted by the industry and government, and all agree that existing standards are "unnecessarily conservative."

Regulations are loosened, and the reactors are back in compliance.

"That's what they say for everything, whether that's the case or not," said Demetrios Basdekas, an engineer retired from the NRC. "Every time you turn around, they say 'We have all this built-in conservatism.'"

The ongoing crisis at the stricken, decades-old Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear facility in Japan has focused attention on the safety of plants elsewhere in the world; it prompted the NRC to look at U.S. reactors, and a report is due in July.

But the factor of aging goes far beyond the issues posed by the disaster at Fukushima.

By the standards in place when they were built, these reactors are old and getting older. As of today, 82 reactors are more than 25 years old.

The AP found proof that aging reactors have been allowed to run less safely to prolong operations. As equipment has approached or violated safety limits, regulators and reactor operators have loosened or bent the rules.

LincVolt, a 1959 Lincoln Continental Mk IV, the car of American dreams of old, has been re-powered by Neil Young with a new series-hybrid system to run on biodiesel and electricity, enabling it to achieve emissions lower than a Prius or similar hybrid car, or any gasoline powered car getting less than 80 mpg.

Apart from all that, Neil Young, the geezer-rock specialist, has put together a team to build a car that can get 100mpg and travel in style. The basis is a 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV convertible.

Yep, a classic Lincoln becomes the framework for a radical re-think in hybrid design technology. Young says he wanted to do it with a real car, not some plastic pile of junk, and to do it in style. So he chose his favorite: the 1959 Lincoln. The car's build and tinker phase was only five short months and it is now on the road, cruising America.

The backbone of the car is a 150kW motor, a bank of lithium-ion batteries, and a small generator capable of running on cooking grease, biodiesel, vegetable oil, kerosene, or any combination of these. "It will even run on unleaded if you really want to," Young laughs.

The car's chief designer is the car conversion legend Johnathan Goodwin of H-Line Conversions. In an interview, Goodwin says the greatest challenge was the five thousand pound weight of the car and making it move without a lot of power waste or a sluggish feel. He also wanted to make it perform well enough that it would be an entrant into the Progressive Automotive X-Prize competition.

Neil Young wanted a classic car that gets 100mpg and drives like a smooth dream. He also wanted it to be primarily electric, but to have a very long range, which meant a fuel source. That fuel source, he insisted, could not be gasoline and ideally would be a multitude of readily-available fuels.

Both men came together and have achieved their wishes. The Linc Volt is currently running on the afore-mentioned electric motor and a temporary compressed natural gas (CNG) engine while the new generator is tweaked and perfected in Australia.

The Tesla Roadster is a battery electric vehicle (BEV) sports car produced by the electric car firm Tesla Motors in California. The Roadster was the first highway-capable all-electric vehicle in serial production available in the United States. Since 2008 Tesla has sold 1,650 Roadsters in 30 countries through March 2011. Tesla began producing right-hand-drive Roadsters in early 2010 for the British Isles, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Roadster is the first production automobile to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first production BEV (all-electric) to travel more than 200 miles (320 km) per charge. The world distance record of 501 km (311 mi) for a production electric car on a single charge was set by a Roadster on October 27, 2009, during the Global Green Challenge in outback Australia, in which it averaged a speed of 25 mph (40 km/h). In March 2010, a Tesla Roadster became the first electric vehicle to win the Monte Carlo Alternative Energy Rally and the first to win any Federation Internationale de l'Automobile-sanctioned championship when a Roadster driven by former Formula One driver Érik Comas beat 96 competitors for range, efficiency and performance in the three-day, nearly 1,000-kilometer (621 mile) challenge.

According to the U.S. EPA, the Roadster can travel 244 miles (393 km) on a single charge of its lithium-ion battery pack, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in 3.9 seconds. The Roadster's efficiency, as of September 2008, was reported as 120 mpgge (2.0 L/100 km). It uses 135 Wh/km (21.7 kW·h/100 mi, 13.5 kW·h/100 km or 490 kJ/km) battery-to-wheel, and has an efficiency of 88% on average.

The Roadster has a base price of US$109,000 in the United States, £86,950 in the United Kingdom, and €84,000 in continental Europe. As an electric vehicle, the Roadster also qualifies for several government incentives in many nations. Tesla intends to sell the current version of the Roadster until early 2012, when its supply of Lotus Elise gliders is expected to run out, as its contract with Lotus Cars for 2,400 gliders expires at the end of 2011. The next generation is not expected to be introduced until at least 2013.

I, alongside with 3 soldiers proceeded to a marked site and as I commenced evaluation under close guard by the 3 soldiers, I discovered an unusual bulge in a cellar, which I presumed to be storage room and as I proceeded to have a closer look at it, I kicked a metal covering and found several metal boxes (6 in number) piled on top each other and locked with a padlock.

On forcing the boxes open, we discovered several armoured weapons including bullets. One of the boxes was filled with hard drugs (heroine) and two to my amazement was filled with money. On discovery of this money, I and the soldiers for close to 3 hours counted the bundles of the currencies which amounted to about US$21 Million dollars in cash, mostly 100 dollar bills, I believe however that all these belongs to the Al Qaeda and Ayman al-Zawahiri forces, and because of this reason, I instructed the soldiers with me to handover all the boxes containing the drugs and amours to our superiors in the US army and agreed to keep the funds to ourselves, so as to help establish ourselves when we return from Iraq.

But with the recent troop redeployment to Afghanistan by our president, we are afraid that the money will be discovered, so with the help of a British Doctor working here and his office enjoy some immunity, we were able to get the package out to a safe location entirely out of trouble spot with a firm in Europe. and it was believes that it belongs to a British medical doctor who was kill last month by a road side bomb in Iraq, but I have now found a much secured way of getting the package out of Europe for you to pick up since am still in the services and can not come home right now, and I will discuss this with you when I am sure that you are willing to assist me, and I believe and pray that this money will be well secured in your hand.

Dr. Rollin McCraty spoke at length on the concept of coherence. He says, " Coherence is the state when the heart, mind and emotions are in energetic alignment and cooperation ". He discussed 3 different hypothesis...

Hypothesis No. 1: All living things are interconnected and we communicate with each other via biological, and electromagnetic fields.

I Am Review: Hollywood Director Exlores What's Right with the World

As the world is transfixed by remarkable change in the Middle East, America's popcorn culture distracts us with another Nicholas Cage road rage movie and the next around-the-clock celebrity train wreck (aka, the Charlie Sheen Show).

Into this void steps Tom Shadyac, Hollywood blockbuster director (Bruce Almighty, The Nutty Professor, Ace Ventura) with his self-financed documentary I Am (opening in LA and NY the next two weekends). The film is a universe away from the pet detective and fat man suit that Shadyac popularized.

I Am is a sure-fire conversation starter about our cultural "mental illness" and the hopeful possibilities for a global mind shift towards greater compassion and human connection.

Shadyac is a refugee from the film industry's lifestyle of conspicuous consumption. He ditched his lonely 17,000 foot Xanadu estate in Pasadena for a modest mobile home in north Malibu. In the midst of downsizing, he suffered a bike accident in 2007 that triggered Post Concussion Syndrome, resulting in paralyzing depression (from which he ultimately recovered).

I Am is the result of Shadyac's rethinking of his priorities and his journey to probe and provoke conversation around two essential questions: what's wrong with our world and what can we all do about it?

To answer these questions, Shadyac hit the road with a four member film crew to converse with a thoughtful mix of philosophers, academics, scientists and spiritual leaders -- such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. Talk show host Thom Hartmann, writer Marc Ian Barash and U.C. Berkeley psychology professor Dacher Keltner stand out as especially fresh and compelling voices.

Shadyac artfully weaves together contributions from this chorus of thinkers and doers to lift up ancient wisdom, critical lessons from the natural world, and insights from new human sciences about how we can live better together.

I Am provides an emotional thought fest that inspires hope for an evolutionary shift. It celebrates the better angels of human nature by spotlighting the deep reservoir of empathy that resides within each of us to act as our brother's keeper.

The film visually puts audiences through a test to prove the point. Sights and sounds of animal violence and human discord are contrasted with scenes of compassion and harmony. During both screenings I attended, the emotional shift within the theater was palatable.

I Am's examination of the long running "greed is good" ethos is timely as Wall Street's restoration kicks into high gear with new bulging profits (and socialized losses). As scientist and environmentalist David Suzuki simply asks: "What is an economy for? How much is enough?"

Likewise, the film's footage of the successful history of non-violent protest movements over the past century is well-timed with the revolutions in the Arab street, and even closer to home in Wisconsin.

The documentary is sure to arouse some cynicism from hardened critics who dismiss the film as New Age drivel or faulty science (as when Shadyac humorously demonstrates the impact of his feelings on a bowl of yogurt). That would be unfortunate, and unfair.

The film may fall short in convincing viewers about the underlying cause of the world's ills -- war, hunger, poverty and the environmental crisis. However, what I Am accomplishes in 76 minutes is to lift up the wellspring of compassion and empathy that is hard-wired in each of us, point to the invisible threads of energy that bind us, and remind us that, in the words of the late Howard Zinn, "change comes from millions of tiny acts that seem insignificant."

Audiences who care about these themes (and why not everyone?), should get to I Am early in its theatrical run to help expand its limited release and move its message into the cultural zeitgeist.

I suspect the film could have its greatest impact among young people. While the so-called Facebook generation can be driven to distraction and navel-gazing, many of them know, deep inside, that adults have left them (and their children) a broken world.

"The younger generation from age 12 and up love this film," Shadyac told a sold-out audience at a screening in Marin County last Saturday night. "They are so open and closer to the source."

The Fukushima I nuclear accidents Fukushima Dai-ichi genshiryoku hatsudensho jiko are a series of ongoing equipment failures and releases of radioactive materials at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, following the 2011 To-hoku earthquake and tsunami at 14:46 JST on 11 March 2011. The plant comprises six separate boiling water reactors maintained by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). Reactors 4, 5 and 6 had been shut down prior to the earthquake for planned maintenance. The remaining reactors were shut down automatically after the earthquake, but the subsequent 14 metres (46 ft) tsunami flooded the plant, knocking out emergency generators needed to run pumps which cool and control the reactors. The flooding and earthquake damage prevented assistance being brought from elsewhere.

The IAEA announced on 27 March that workers hospitalized as a precaution on 25 March had been exposed to between 2 and 6 Sv of radiation at their ankles when standing in water in unit 3. Much of the raunchy porn on the Internet wouldn't exist were it not for the help of a handful of legitimate companies operating quietly in the background.

There is still oodles of money to be made in dot-com land. Check out the anonymous San Fernando Valley, Calif. headquarters of Cybernet Ventures, inside a former plumbing supply warehouse. With its mostly bare walls, Dilbert cubicles and geeky guys in white shirts and ties, Cybernet could pass for an insurance office. But it's a Web venture, and it's probably making a pile of money.

As the owner of the Adult Check Internet access system, Cybernet acts as the digital gatekeeper to one of the largest collections of porn anywhere. Adult Check's 4 million customers--in the U.S. and as many as 120 foreign countries--pay $20 every three months for the privilege of ogling 400,000 sex sites, including everything from "Nude Amazon Women" to "Boy O Boy." Once they're hooked, Adult Check's affiliated Web sites will usually try to trade up customers to a "Gold" membership of $20 a month, providing access to even more sex-drenched content.

Though the company won't confirm sales, it's likely that Cybernet is handling $320 million annually in membership revenues. A big chunk of that gets passed along to the content providers--the participating porn sites. The business has been so successful that its press-shy, thirty-something founder and co-owner, Laith Alsarraf, has removed himself from day-to-day affairs of the company. He spends much of his money and time on Pooch Heaven, a nonprofit pet project that rescues stray dogs and places them on his 820-acre ranch outside of Los Angeles.

"Business is good," smiles Timothy Umbreit, Cybernet's vice president and chief operating officer. The company recently expanded to an 11,000-square-foot call center in nearby Burbank.

Until recently Alsarraf and his company have managed to keep a low profile. But now, thanks to a lawsuit filed by eccentric Los Angeles money manager Norman Zadeh, Adult Check and the handful of businesses that enable much of the porn on the Internet to thrive are coming under closer scrutiny.

Zadeh is no antiporn crusader. A balding, bespectacled former mathematician who applied his skills to casino tables and then to private money management, he publishes something called Perfect 10, a quarterly nudie magazine whose selling proposition is that the women in it aren't surgically enhanced. In a lawsuit filed in a California federal court, he accuses Adult Check of ripping him off by working with porno sites that steal his pictures for use in doctored nude celebrity photos. Though shady characters have been posting digitally forged nude celebrity photos for as long as the Internet has been around, Zadeh is one of the few peddlers of porn to speak out about what he claims is copyright infringement.

"Everyone is stealing our film,"Zadeh seethes in his modern, 16,000-square-foot home above Beverly Hills, surrounded by Polaroids of nudes and a small stable of belly-baring models who do odd jobs around the house.
Though Zadeh faces an uphill battle convincing a judge that Adult Check can somehow police millions of digitized photo images, he has succeeded in shining an unwelcome spotlight on the handful of otherwise legitimate companies that are responsible for processing much of the porn on the Internet. While there's debate about the size of the Internet porn industry, with most estimates pegging it at around $1 billion, there's no question that porn--unlike the rest of Internet commerce--had a clear profit potential from the start.

Much of the Web porn trade wouldn't exist were it not for the four firms Zadeh complains about:Adult Check, CyberAge and two credit card processing outfits, Credit Card Billing (CCBill) and Internet Billing Co. (A third firm, Paycom in Marina del Rey, Calif., is another large processor of credit card chits for purchases of dirty pictures.) Though he isn't suing them, Zadeh even accuses giant search engines Yahoo and Google of being a part of the cabal, since they take advertising from the bogus celebrity sites.

Whenever there's an Internet porn transaction, there's a good chance that at least one of these outfits had a hand in it. Like Adult Check, Glendale, Calif.-based CyberAge serves as a Napster-like portal to some 250,000 sex sites. Members pay fees starting at $20 a year to gain access to CyberAge sites with such creative names as "Lustville" and "Bangkok Bombshells."In return for getting customers to fork over their credit card numbers, the owners of the porno sites get headhunting fees ranging from $11 to $46 a pop, or as much as $100,000 a month, according to CyberAge.

CyberAge, formerly AgeCheck, was started by three Armenian carpenters who worked for Adult Check's cofounder. It didn't take them long to figure out that hanging wallboard isn't as lucrative as peddling skin. Adult Check subsequently sued and forced the company to change its name.

Ironically, conservatives have only themselves to blame for the success of Adult Check and its ilk. The Communications Decency Act of 1996, which was supposed to clamp down on indecent materials on the Internet, endorsed the use of credit cards for age verification purposes, presumably because kids can't get credit cards. Though the act was overturned by the Supreme Court, porn operators are still shielded from accusations of peddling obscene material to minors so long as they require a credit card.

Not surprisingly, Visa, MasterCard and American Express aren't especially enthused that their products have become the common currency of Internet porn. Never mind the image issue; the sector is rife with fraud, defaulting cardholders and chargebacks associated with contested bills. Last year AmEx banned the use of its card for online porn purchases, while the other two companies charge vendors discount fees of as much as 10% of the purchase to cover losses.

Making virtue out of necessity, CCBill, Internet Billing and Paycom have since become the biggest middlemen between the banks and the porn operators, effectively serving as the handmaidens to the business by weeding out fraud and the operators who stretch the boundaries of obscenity.

"We don't allow child pornography or bestiality," sniffs J. Christopher Mallick, the chief executive of Paycom (who in a prior career was once dragged into court in a Chapter 7 involuntary bankruptcy). Mallick claims his company visits every page of every site it deals with on a monthly basis to ensure that no one is pushing the boundaries of legality. He says the company processes about 2 million transactions a month, at an average of $20 per purchase.

The three middlemen firms are fixtures at porn conventions, where they hustle for business surrounded by seminude actors and sex-toy vendors. "CCBill is constantly coming up with new and innovative ideas to help their customers increase revenues," gushes Jeffrey Miller, a former assistant vice president at Merrill Lynch who quit his day job after getting into the Internet porn business with his wife in 1996.

According to these estimates, the gradual replacement of conventional energy systems based on oil, natural gas, coal or nuclear power a new generation of energy products of this technology, along with the development of conventional renewables (wind, solar, geothermal), raises serious conditions overturn existing balances in the global energy scene.

The scientific basis of the unit

The cold fusion process that is based on scientific unit Hyperion, is a "hot" field of physics that has caused heated debates in recent years. This is a reaction occurs at room temperature, in which two smaller nuclei together to form a larger simultaneously releasing large amounts of energy. In the mid 80's Fleishmann and Pons claimed to have achieved cold fusion reaction, but their experiment could not be repeated. Since any theory and assumption that cold fusion was dismissed, thus creating a stream of scientific caution on the issue. Despite this skepticism a small portion of scientists continued to investigate the matter.

The latest subversive news came from Italy and those which have started setting up the unit Hyperion.

Two scientists, engineer Andrea Rossi and Prof. Sergio Focardi, University of Bologna, shown publicly on 14 January of this year's time, a cold fusion device capable of producing 12.400 Wh heat entering only 400 W power. The Italian scientists showed that a new production of green energy with common materials (nickel and hydrogen catalyst), with low cost and without emitting air pollutants or radioactive waste. The results already confirmed by independent third parties and readings are positive criticism from first physical size as the professor of the University of Uppsala Sven Kullander, president of the National Academy of Sciences Energy Committee, the Hanno Essén, professor at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, the Dr Edmud Storms, etc.

There are many who argue that the specific effect of Engineering and Natural Rossi Focardi creates the need to ... rewrite some chapters of physics.

Edmund Storms on the Rossi device: "There will be a stampede."

Dr. Storms: "They [Rossi and Focardi] found a way of amplifying the effect to a level that makes it attractive as an industrial source of energy and people in the cold fusion field have been working towards that, but they had not achieved that level of heat production, and so this was both a bit of a surprise and a bit shock, but a bit of a kick to get people moving a little more rapidly now. And it looks like the phenomenon will actually have an application."

James: "This is a major step then, would you not agree?"

Dr. Storms: "Oh yes, It's a major step. It doesn't change the reality, the reality had already been established, but it has moved the debate from the laboratory into an industrial environment, and it's put the phenomenon on the map now. People, skeptics can no longer ignore what's going on, it's such a high level, and apparently quite reproducible, that there's no doubt that it has the potential to really be a serious competitor for a primary energy."

James: "So we've arrived, so to speak."

Dr. Storms: "We've arrived. It's interesting we've arrived in a different car than we thought we were. Cold fusion started out using deuterium and palladium, and then Rossi found that it worked quite well in nickel and light hydrogen."

James: Regarding that, since I saw the 60 mins interview, and saw what the Israeli's did over there in their lab, what did … the Italians do that's different? Were they financed well? What made them be ahead of everybody else regarding this issue?"

Dr. Storms: "That question is a little difficult to answer. The contrast between the Israelis, Energetics, … they were using – just to give you a little bit of understanding – they were using heavy water, palladium in an electrolytic cell, and applying what they call Superwave that allows the palladium to get to a very high composition. They had worked with the Italians to create palladium that could achieve these high compositions. So they were getting success in a more conventional framework.

Rossi hit upon this somewhat by accident. He was using a nickel catalyst to explore ways of making a fuel by combining hydrogen and carbon monoxide and apparently, observed quite by accident, that his [apparatus] was making extra energy. So then he explored it from that point of view and, apparently, over a year or two, amplified the effect.

He's exploring the gas loading area of the field. This is also a region, a method used in the heavy water, or the heavy hydrogen, system. But in this case, it was light hydrogen, ordinary hydrogen and nickel and what happens is quite amazing.

You create the right conditions in the nickel, and he has a secret method for doing that, and all you do is add hydrogen to it and it makes huge amounts of energy based upon a nuclear reaction."

James: "Wow. Alright. I have a number of questions since you said secret. Are they going to be transparent with what they discovered? If I were them, I would tell everybody how they did it, or are they not doing that?"

Dr. Storms: "Well, you really need a patent, you need to protect your intellectual property. You want to be able to gain some economic benefit from the discovery. So far, they have not gotten a patent, and that's always been difficult in the cold fusion field because the patent examiners simply don't believe that it's real.

So, until they get a patent, they're not revealing how they do it. Now, they've been upfront about what they can do and what they promise to do, and so far, they've fulfilled these promises. Once they get their patent, then they promise to reveal how they go about doing this."

James asked Dr. Storms a question from an unnamed listener who apparently knew this interview would be happening. The question?

"Some said this is LENR, not cold fusion. What's the difference?"

Dr. Storms: "Well there is no difference. It's purely a matter of semantics. There is a phenomenon, and that phenomenon allows a nuclear reaction to be initiated in a chemical environment, and it's a very special chemical environment, it's one that we don't understand yet, we don't have total control over it, so that it's difficult to reproduce, although not impossible, it's been replicated hundreds of times, so it's real.

But it's a process whereby the Coulomb barrier is reduced in magnitude, in a solid, by some kind of … oh what would I call it … chemical mechanism. It's not chemistry, but it involves atoms and electrons, which of course apply to chemistry.

And so, what do you call it? Well it was called cold fusion by Steve Jones, and that stuck. And then later people said, you know, that's not very accurate because you get transmutations, and it may not be fusion directly, so let's make it describe a bigger area, so we'll call it low-energy nuclear reactions [LENR]. I like the chemically-assisted nuclear reactions [CANR] description myself, but nevertheless, it's all the same thing. It's hard to believe that nature has only one technique for doing something so extraordinary."

James: "As far as patents go for this subject matter, are you briefed on that all the time, are other scientists made aware of what's happening with that, or do you hear about it later?"

Dr. Storms: "Well it generally percolates into the cold fusion chat rooms fairly quickly. There was a patent that was made known by Windom-Larson most recently, but that was granted, oh I guess it was actually filed back in 2005.

Very few are granted, and most of the ones that have been granted, I might add, are absolutely useless as patents because not only don't they describe very well what is going on, but in the absence of any understanding, their descriptions are not implementable, you cannot take the patent and then do what the patent claims, which is what a patent absolutely requires. It has to describe how a person that skilled in the arts can go about replicating what the claims may be.

None of the patents do that, so technically, their not valid, and that 's a big problem, until somebody makes something that works, and then describes how they made it work and that's where Rossi comes in, because he in fact does have something that works and once he shows how it works, he will have a valid patent."

James then asked Dr. Storms what type of press did the Italians get on their demonstration.

Dr. Storms: "The Swedish newspapers, the Italian newspapers, the Greek newspapers, they showed an interest. The American newspapers showed none at all. It's been on a number of blogs and talked about in a number of chat rooms, but no, it hasn't reached a level of any serious importance to the American press."

James: "Why do you think that is now?"

Dr. Storms: "Mainly because, it is institutionally the belief that cold fusion is not real, or if it is real, it's so trivial, it'd make no difference to anybody. That's institutional. It's the myth that's in, we'll call it, the intellectual structure of the United States, and a number of other countries.

There a few countries where that's not true, and Italy is one of them. The government there believes that it's real, and they're doing everything they can to develop it. The government in China believes it's real an they're doing everything they can to develop it."

James: "So what is the problem? Regardless whether it was an American issue or an Italian issue, that should be all over the press here, and it's not. It absolutely amazes me that this needs to be happening right now, what I'm doing. The press should've had this totally covered.

Well, what's next for you? Are you going to be following what the Italians are doing, are you going to go to Italy and be working on it, and try to do what they've done and replicate it where you are?"

Dr. Storms: "Well, first of all, I haven't been invited. Rossi is determining who's going to watch this – he's promised a demonstration in Florida that's coming up in October. And there will be some people from the US government there watching, and hopefully they will be convinced that it's real and that will change the attitudes."

James: "So they still – after this entire time – can't wrap their head around it!"

Dr. Storms: This obviously is not a rational world, and we, on many levels, do not have a rational government. It is very simple once you realize that this irrationality is present.

Yes, people are trying to replicate what he did. But in the absence of this secret addition, it's all guesswork [refering to the secret ingredient Rossi is using as a catalyst]. And that's been pretty much true of all the work in the field. We do not have a good theory, we don't have a path to follow, and so people do a lot of random searches, and when somebody – I'll use the analogy prospecting for gold – when somebody finds a nugget, everybody runs to the spot where that guy found the nugget and everybody starts to dig there. Maybe some other nuggets will be found, maybe not.

That's what has made it easy for the skeptics to blow it off, and it's made it easy for the government to pretend that it doesn't exist."

James then asked why was the upcoming demo is being done in Florida.

Dr. Storms: That's where the factory is that Rossi owns. Rossi has business interests in the United States, he has a number of companies. He has a company in Florida and that's where the cells are being manufactured.

James: "So they've [Rossi and co.] already started the process then?"

Dr. Storms: "Oh, yeah. The [recent demonstration] in Bologna was a single cell unit and it put out 10Kilowatts and it's put out even more energy in other circumstances. He's going to build a hundred cell unit in Florida, he claims, to try to run a Megawatt. That's pretty difficult to ignore."

James: "What do you think they're going to be able to do of a practical use? What are they going to use it for initially?"

Dr. Storms: "Well, they're planning to use this as a source of energy in a factory in Greece, and they're making arrangements in Greece for this to be incorporated into an industrial application, an industrial factory.

It has to be done in industry at this level because we don't know if it's safe, we don't know it's characteristics, we just don't know enough about it to put it into individual homes. This is what he says, and it's quite rational. It has to be explored, its characteristics have to be understood in an industrial environment, so they're going to do that in Greece.

Of course, he's taking orders, and I'm sure there'll be people from all over the world, where regulations are not so quite severe, and minds are more open than they are here, and they'll buy units, and put them in their factories, and suddenly the cost of energy to those companies will go down significantly, and all of a sudden people will panic, and then there'll be a stampede to buy these things."

James: "The irony of the timing of all this now, seeing what's going on in the Middle East right now, everything's going up at the gas tank, people looking at other energy things, do you find this unusual, the timing of this? This could have happened five years ago, and right now, with the complete and total collapse of many economies around the world, suddenly these guys in Italy come up with something. Did that surprise you?"

Dr. Storms: "Well, life always surprises me. It always has these synergistic relationships happening all the time. No, it didn't surprise me. It's quite, what would I call it, simple justice. The system absolutely needs this, and suddenly it's available. I guess it took both happening at the same time to change minds.

You have to be desperate enough to want to believe that this is real, and then you have to have a device that puts so much energy out that you cannot ignore it, and you marry those two things together, and the skeptics are just blown away."

James: "If this is going to happen in Florida, obviously the press is going to catch wind of it, and if it is a private meeting for this demonstration, are you .. thinking that now all the big money people behind the scenes are going to get in on this deal and close it off, and compartmentalize it, and not give it to the public?"

Dr. Storms: "I don't think that's possible."

James: "… because I don't think you should have been cut out of it. I mean, you're one of the guys that stood tall before anybody!"

Dr. Storms: "Well I appreciate that, but I'm not being cut out of it, and in fact, I don't feel that I've been cut out of it.

I'm funded. We're working to try to understand the mechanism and so we're hoping to have a seat at the table when the final decisions are made. But Rossi is clearly in charge of his own discovery, and I wouldn't find that unusual."

James: "OK, well, listen, I'm glad that you're back, I'm glad that you've told us this, I'm glad that we've covered it here. I want to thank you very much Dr. Storms for always being there for for me and helping me out, and making this a public issue, so thank you very much, much appreciated. We'll be talking to you very soon. You may be surprised – we may hit Florida anyway!"

Dr. Storms: "Well James, I appreciate your efforts too, it's efforts like yours that make it possible for people to find out what's going on."

Introduction to quantum ring theory

1. The principal aim of Quantum Ring Theory

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) started to work in March 2010. Most of the people believe that the main aim of the experiments made in the LHC is to confirm the superstring theory, the existence of the Higgs boson, and the Suppersymmetry (Susy).

But the principal aim of the LHC experiments is actually another one: the aim is to confirm the fundamental principles of Quantum Mechanics.
Because if LHC confirms superstrings, Higgs boson, and Susy, this means that all the principles of Quantum Mechanics are correct, since those three theories were developed from the concepts of Quantum Mechanics.

All the current theories, as Quantum Field Theory, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, Standard Model, etc., all they keep the fundamental principles of Quantum Mechanics.
Quantum Field Theory is the successor of Quantum Mechanics. It was developed so that to eliminate some inconsistencies of QM, in order to refine the theory. But QFT keeps all the foundations of QM.

So, the confirmation of those three theories in the LHC will have for the theorists the following meaning: all the principles of QM are correct. And this is actually the principal objective why they built the LHC.

From the data collected along March and December 2010, the particles predicted in the Supersymmetry (Susy) would ougth to be already found.
But the LHC did find NOTHING of Susy predictions.

Some physicits already started to think that the LHC experiments will show the need of looking for a New Physics.
But the most physicists keep yet their hope to find evidences for the superstring, the Higgs boson, and Susy, when the LHC will work with its maximum power in 2014.

But the fact that they did not find evidences that confirm Susy along 2010 suggests that Supersymmetry actually does not exist. And so, probably in 2014 they will find nothing again.

Therefore, probably in 2014 there will be a general consensus in the community of physicits: the need of looking for a New Physics.

Nevertheless, having a consensus about the need of a New Physics, a fundamental question arises:

What sort of New Physics will it be?

Only two sort of New Physics are possible:

1- A New Physics that keeps all the fundamental principles of Quantum Mechanics, as the physicists did along the development of Quantum Field Theory.

2- A New Physics that rejects some principles of Quantum Mechanics, replacing them by new ones. Then such New Theory will be a rival of Quantum Field Theory, since it will be a candidate to be a new successor of Quantum Mechanics, with some of its principles replaced by new ones.

Then let's analyse the two sort of New Physics.

1- Keeping the principles of QM – Along 100 years, thousand of theorists developed several theories based on the foundations of Quantum Mechanics, which fundamental principles the scientific community now try to confirm in the LHC.
Then a question arises: if they did not succeed to find a correct theory along 100 years under that way of keeping the fundamental principles of Quantum Mechanics, is it reasonable to hope that they will succeed to find it in the next years, by continuing to keep those fundamental principles of QM not confirmed in the LHC?

2- Rejecting and replacing some principles of QM - OK, we realized that it makes no sense to keep all the principles of QM, since after 100 years of attempts, the LHC disproved such an effort, showing that the structure of our universe is not like predicted in the prevailing theories. Then there is need to look for a New Physics with new principles.

But then three questions arise:
- what sort of new principles must be adopted?
- what are the principles of Quantum Mechanics that need to be rejected?
- what are the new principles which would have to replace those ones rejected in QM?

This is the question.
The quantum theorists have no idea about such matter.

The principal aim of Quantum Ring Theory is just to show what fundamental principles of Quantum Mechanics must be rejected, and what are the new principles that must replace them.

Quantum Ring Theory exhibits coherent arguments (sometimes they are irrefutable, like in the case of the Bohr successes, which require a new hydrogen atom different of that proposed in Quantum Mechanics), by showing what new principles must be incorporated in Quantum Mechanics, and "why" it's indispensable to incorporate them.

2. The successes of Bohr

What is the meaning of the successes of Bohr ?

The successes of the Bohr theory are an indisputable proof on that something is wrong with the foundations of Quantum Mechanics.

The most physicists have not knowledge of the meaning of the Bohr successes, because the most of them prefer to ignore its meaning, since it is a very unpleasant subject, inasmuch it points out a serious flaw of QM.

The first physicist to understand the true meaning of Bohr successes was Schrödinger. In an article intitled On a Remarkable Property of the Quantum-Orbits of a Single Electron, while commenting on a factor calculated from a Bohr orbit which gave an impressive result, he wrote:
"It is difficult to believe that this result is merely an accidental mathematical consequence of the quantum conditions, and has no deeper physical meaning"
Why did Schrödinger say such a thing?
And why was so hard to him to believe that the impressive result of Bohr theory could be a single coincidence ?
And what would he want to say with "deeper physical meaning"?

Let's talk about.

3. The mystery of the centripetal acceleration

In the Bohr hydrogen atom, the electron emits photons when it jumps from a energy level to another one.
In his calculation, Bohr considered that in the instant when the photons are emitted the electron is submitted to a centripetal acceleration.

The results of the Bohr theory are very impressive.
Actually, from the mathematical probability it's IMPOSSIBLE that the successes of his theory may be simply accidental.

The conclusion is obvious: as the centripetal acceleration plays a role in the Bohr calculus, it's unequivocal that the centripetal acceleration has some connection with the mechanism which emits photons in the atom.

Then here is the mystery:
In the Quantum Mechanics the electron into the electrosphere cannot be submitted to a centripetal acceleration.
It's easy to understand why, since the electron cannot have trajectory within the electrosphere. Indeed, magine an electron that moves between two energy levels, in the hydrogen atom. Well, it is submitted to the attraction with the proton. If the electron should be moving between two points in the electrosphere, it would have to be accelerated (or slowed), and it would have to emit a continuous spectrum, according to Maxwell theory. But the experiments show that it does not happen.

So we have the following situation:

1- For Quantum Mechanics to be 100% correct, it's indispensable that there is no centripetal acceleration on the electron.

2- Therefore, for QM to be 100% correct, the Bohr theory must be 100% wrong. Otherwise, if Bohr theory is not 100% wrong, then Quantum Mechanics cannot be 100% correct.

3- The Bohr model cannot be 100% wrong, because it is impossible, according to the mathematical probability

4- From the item 3 above, one concludes that centripetal acceleration on the electron really exists within the atom

5- First conclusion:
Quantum Mechanics cannot be 100% correct.
To be correct, QM requires that Bohr theory must be 100% incorrect. In another words: to be correct, QM requires that a centripetal acceleration on the electron cannot exist. And since Bohr theory shows that it exists, then something is missing in Quantum Mechanics.

6- Second conclusion:
A satisfactory model of hydrogen atom must consider the existence of a centripetal acceleration on the electron. A theory on the hydrogem atom (unable to explain the existence of the centripetal acceleration on the electron) cannot be 100% correct.

The situation nowadays

As Quantum Mechanics is incompatible with the Bohr model, the physicists concluded that Bohr successes can be only consequence of a fantastic coincidence.
And it couldn't be on another way.
If they should admit that Bohr successes are not accidental, the physicists would have to admit that Quantum Mechanics cannot be 100% correct, since it does not admit the electron to be submitted to a centripetal acceleration.

But from the mathematical probability it's IMPOSSIBLE that Bohr successes can be a mere coincidence, as claim the community of physicists.
That's what bothered so much Schrödinger.
He noted that some mystery was hidden in the Bohr theory.
The successes of his theory might not be result of mere coincidence.

But as always happens in the history of science, is often more convenient to avoid some thorny issues. And physicists prefer to ignore the mystery surrounding the theory of Bohr and quantum mechanics.

Fundamental premise to be filled by a new theory on hydrogen model

From the above, we realize that there is an indispensable premise to be filled:
Any theory on the hydrogen atom, in which the electron is NOT submitted to a centripetal acceleration, CANNOT be 100% correct
Suppose that the hydrogen model of Quantum Ring Theory is wrong.
However, any other theory which proposes a new hydrogen model, to be acceptable, must fill this fundamental premise: it must consider the existence of the centripetal acceleration on the electron, and to explain its existence.

Let's then see how Quantum Ring Theory explains the existence of the centripetal acceleration on the electron, when the atom emits photons.

4. How is the photon emitted in Quantum Ring Theory?In QRT the photon is emitted through a resonance process.
In Quantum Mechanics the photon is also emitted from a resonance process.

Therefore, QRT and QM agree on this point: the photons are emitted by a resonance process.
In this point Quantum Mechanics is correct.
And in this point Bohr's theory is wrong, because in his theory the photon is NOT emitted by a resonance process.

Some obvious questions:

1- Since Bohr theory is not correct (because it does not consider that photons are emitted by resonance), and since in his theory the centripetal acceleration plays some role in the instant of the photon emission, then how can his theory get so many fantastic successes ?
Answer:
You will understand it ahead, after get touch with the mechanism of photons emission proposed in QRT.

2- Since in Quantum Ring Theory the photon is emitted by resonance (as happens in Quantum Mechanics), and this one is the CORRECT mechanism of photons emission, then how can the centripetal acceleration play some role in the photons emission?
Answer:
The centripetal acceleration does NOT play ANY role in the photons emission. This is the error of the Bohr theory.
But there is, YES, a centripetal acceleration on the electron, in the instant when the photon is emitted. In spite of such centripetal acceleration does not play any role in the process of photons emissions, nevertheless the centripetal acceleration really exists on the electron, in the instant when the atom emits photons. According to Quantum Mechanics, this is impossible. This is the error of Quantum Mechanics.

We will see ahead how Quantum Ring Theory solves such mystery of the existence of the centripetal acceleration on the electron, a mystery that Quantum Mechanics cannot explain.

5. Quantum Ring Theory: why was it developed?

In the book Quantum Physics by Eisberg and Resnick, they state that from the basis of the current Nuclear Physics there is no way to explain some ordinary nuclear phenomena:
"Though we dispose nowadays of a sufficient complete assembly of information about the nuclear forces, we realize that they are too much complexes, not having been possible up to now to use this acknowledge for building an extensive theory of the nuclei. In other words, we cannot explain the whole properties of nuclei in function of the properties of the nuclear forces that actuate on their protons and neutrons".

So, as from the current foundations of Nuclear Physics some ordinary nuclear phenomena cannot be explained, it is reasonable to expect that such current foundations of Nuclear Physics cannot explain cold fusion too. After all, since it is missing something fundamental in the current Nuclear Physics, probably it is just such lack of the theory that is missing for explaining cold fusion.
So, was QRT developed for the explanation of cold fusion?

No. When I started to develop my theory in 1990, I did not know cold fusion. I decided to look for new theoretical models because I realized at that time that the current theories cannot explain several ordinary phenomena. So, QRT was developed for the explanation of ordinary phenomena not explained by current Atomic and Nuclear Physics.
I discovered the existence of cold fusion only in the end of 1998, by reading a paper by Mike Carrell in Frontier Perspectives. And when in 1999 I started to read about cold fusion in the Infinite Energy Magazine, I started to realize that from those models of mine, (developed for the explanation of ordinary phenomena not explained by current Nuclear Physics) cold fusion occurrence should be possible.
One of the fundamental backgrounds of Quantum Ring Theory is the helical trajectory (zitterbewegung) of elementary particles. The zitterbewegung was discovered by Schrödinger, from his interpretation of the Dirac equation of the electron.
According to Quantum Ring Theory, the light is composed of photons constituted by a particle and its antiparticle, moving with helical trajectory. These particle and antiparticle are formed by the constituents of the ether. The helical motion of the light was confirmed by an experiment published in Phys. Rev. Letters in July 2010, under the title "Unveiling a Truncated Optical Lattice Associated with a Triangular Aperture Using Light's Orbital Angular Momentum".

So, as an experiment confirmed the prediction of Quantum Ring Theory that photons have helical trajectory, there is a good reason to believe in the existence of the helical trajectory of the elementary particles in general.
But there are several other questions related to the helical trajectory. For instance, from a hydrogen model composed by one electron that moves with helical trajectory in the electrosphere of the proton we can explain the existence of hydrinos, which is the subject of research by Randell Mills in BlackLight Power Inc.
Also, a question not explained by Quantum Mechanics: the motion of the electron between energy levels in the electrosphere of atoms. An experiment made by the Nobel Laureate Hans Dehmelt showed that the electron moves between two points in the electrosphere of atoms. But according to Quantum Mechanics the electron cannot move between two points in the electrosphere, and so the quantum theorists were obliged to deny Dehmelt experiment: they claim that the atom is "dressed" in Dehmelt experiment, a sort of ad hoc solution adopted by quantum theorists every time when the theory is discredited by some experiment (as happened with cold fusion along 20 years). In Quantum Ring Theory, thanks to its helical trajectory, the electron moves between the levels in the electrosphere, which is agree to the results of the Dehmelt experiment.

The helical trajectory is related to cold fusion too, because in QRT the neutron is composed by proton+electron. Into the structure of the neutron the electron loses its helical trajectory, and the energy of the zitterbewegung is responsible for the excess energy that occurs in many cold fusion experiments, as for instance in the Conte-Pieralice experiment: in their experiment the cathode was melt, a result not expected by them, since there was not (apparently) energy available for the electron to do it.
Quantum Ring Theory is rival of Quantum Field Theory. The both theories were developed so that to eliminate some inconsistencies of Quantum Mechanics. So, they both are candidate to be a successor of QM. The difference between QRT and QFT lies in their foundations: while QFT keeps the foundations of QM, unlike QRT replaces some of them.

6. Helical trajectory within the hydrogen atom

As Quantum Mechanics, to be 100% correct, requires that Bohr theory must be 100% wrong, obviously the physicists have a paradox in their hand, because from the mathematical probability it's impossible to consider Bohr's successes as merely accidental.
The successes of Bohr theory are explained by considering the hydrogen model proposed in Quantum Ring Theory, which shows that the centripetal acceleration on the electron exists, but it is not like Bohr imagined. The centripetal acceleration appears on the electron due to its helical trajectory.
The centripetal acceleration on the electron does NOT play a role in the mechanism of the photon emission, like Bohr wrongly supposed.
However, the centripetal acceleration exists, like Quantum Ring Theory shows, and Quantum Mechanics cannot explain its existence. Nowadays, when the solution proposed in QRT for the paradox of Bohr successes is exhibited for a quantum theorist, he tries to hide from everybody that Quantum Ring Theory has solved the mystery, because the community of academic physicists try to hide from the people such disagreeable fact: that Quantum Mechanics has several unacceptable paradoxes.
The solution of the paradox, explained by the hydrogen atom of Quantum Ring Theory, is shown in the two figures ahead.

Look at the figure 2.
Obviously there are many other mechanisms in such hydrogen model proposed in Quantum Ring Theory. For instance, there is a dilation in the space of the electrosphere of proton where the electron moves with helical trajectory. Such density of the space is produced by the quantity of Dirac strings produced by the proton.

Thanks to such dilation, which changes the mass of the electron (with regard to the proton), the electron can move with constant speed into the electrosphere, when it jumps from two levels of energy (this explains the result obtained in the Dehmelt experiment), because the electron is submitted to two contrary and equal forces: the force of attraction with the proton, and a force of repulsion due to the dilation of the space. So, its null the resultant of forces on the electron, when it moves radially within the electrosphere.

Also, there is a mechanism which explains why the electron jumps from no consecutive levels.

But let's see why the centripetal acceleration do exists, as shown in the figure 2.
The atom emits photons when the distance REM (radius of emission) gets resonance with the density of Dirac strings into the elecrosphere (when it moves in radial direction into the electrosphere, the electron crosses such strings).

Looking at the figure 2, we see that the electron is submitted to a centripetal acceleration due to its helical trajectory. Such centripetal acceleration does not play any role in the resonance between the electron and the Dirac strings (of the proton). But due to a coincidence, the radius of the electron's helical trajectory is the same radius considered by Bohr in his calculus. Other coincidence is the fact that the force on the electron due to its helical trajectory is equal the force of attraction proton-electron, considered by Bohr. The radius of Bohr is also equal the radius of the electron's orbit in the helical trajectory.
Thanks to this series of coincidences, the Bohr theory is able to yield those fantastic successes, in spite of his model is wrong.

7. The accordion effect

Let's now speak a little about the new nuclear model proposed in QRT, named Hexagonal Floors Model.
Look at figure 3. In the center of the nuclei there is a nucleon 2He4. It produces gravitational Dirac strings (they are a flux of gravitons). They form the principal field of the nuclei. Each string captures protons, or neutrons, or deuterions. The figure ahead shows a nucleus 8O16, with its central 2He4 which forms the Dirac strings f1 , f2 , f3 , f4, f5, f6 , and each one of those strings capture one deuterium. In the oxygen nuclei there is one complete hexagonal floor.

Of course the real hexagonal floor existing in Nature is not flat as shown in the figure. Due to repulsions between the deuterium nucleons, there is an oscillatory motion of them with regard to the central 2He4.

In the figure 3, there are another Dirac strings: in blue collor. They form a Coulombic field, which is induced by the rotation of the principal field. It is named secondary field. Its blue strings are not gravitational. They are formed by a flux of electric particles of the ether.

The figure 4 shows a nucleus with 7 complete hexagonal floors. The distance between the hexagonal floors, indicated by Dd, has contraction and expansion, a phenomenon named Accordion Effect, because the hexagonal floors behave like if they should be the bellows of an accordion.

The Accordion Effect explains a property of some nuclei, like the U238. It has 92 protons (pair) and 146 neutrons (also pair). The U238 changes its shape, from a ellipsoid in the horizontal to an ellipsoid in the vertical, and the changing in the diameter is 30% . There is no way to explain such big changing through the models of current Nuclear Physics, because having a number pair of protons (92) and a number pair of neutrons (146) the nucleus has a symmetry, and its expansion-contraction would have to occur in all the radial directions (according to Nuclear Physics). So, the contraction-expansion of the U238 ought to be spherical, according to Nuclear Physics, and not elliptical as the experiments show. If the distribution of protons and neutrons should be like predicted in current Nuclear Physics, the growth of the radius of the 92U238 ought to be in all directions, and not in one preferential direction, as really happens.
Looking at the nuclear model proposed in QRT, with several hexagonal floors, we realize that its contraction-expansion must occur in a preferential direction, like happens with the U238.
The distribution of nucleons in the nuclear model of QRT is AXIAL (it has a preferential direction, consequence of the fact that protons and neutrons are captured by the Dirac strings produced by the central 2He4).
The distribution of nucleons in the nuclear models of Nuclear Physics is RADIAL (that's why those models are unable to explain that dilation of the 92U238).

It's reasonable to suppose that such accordion-effect can influence in the cold fusion reactions, by considering a resonance between the contraction-expansion of the distance Dd of some nuclei (as the Pd in the lattice) and the oscillations of deuterium nuclei (of the heavy water used in the electrolityc cell) due to the zero-point energy, when the oscillation of the Pd nuclei are aligned with the oscillation of deuterium nucleons due to the zero point energy. Such alignment can be get, for instance, with an external magnetic field applied externally to the vessel. Obviously a suitable laser can help the resonance, as occurred in the Lets-Cravens experiment, since the frequency of the laser can enter in resonance with the oscillation of the Pd nuclei and deuterium nucleons.

As said, the secondary field of nuclei is responsible for the Coulombic repulsions. So, the fusion of two nuclei depends on the energy enough to pierce the two secondary fields of the two nuclei. This is what occurs in hot fusion.

But in cold fusion probably there is no need to pierce the secondary field. That's because in the secondary field there is a lack, as shown in the figure 5. This "hole" is consequence of the way in which the secondary field is formed: it is induced by the principal field, and it's impossible a formation of the Dirac strings without having a hole.
This "hole" in the secondary fields of nuclei explains a paradox in Nuclear Physics: an alfa particle 2He4 can leave the 92U238 with energy 4MeV, in spite of the energy required for trespass the Coulombic barrier is 8MeV (100% stronger than 4MeV). They call it tunneling effect. The physicists wrongly believe that Gamow had explained the paradox of 92U328. However the Gamow explanation introduces another unacceptable paradox, as shown in Quantum Ring Theory. And so he solved a paradox by introducing another unacceptable paradox.
Besides, the tunneling effect is able to make a particle to trespass a barrier which energy is 30% , 40 % or at maximum 50% stronger then the energy of the particle. But a barrier 100% stronger cannot be crossed, as happens in the 92U238. The paradox of 2He4 emission by the 92U238 must to be explained by considering the hole in the secondary field of the 92U238 nuclei, as considered in Quantum Ring Theory.

Look at the figure 3 again. As the Dirac strings are formed by gravitons, then such strings would have to attract one each other, and they could not have the distribution shown in the figure 3. Instead of being distributed symmetrically about the central 2He4, the strings should have to be concentrated all them in one side.
In QRT it's proposed that the ether is filled by electric particles e(+) and e(-), magnetic particles m(+) and m(-), and gravitational particles g(+) and g(-). But there are also REPULSIVE gravitational particles G(+) and G(-), and they are responsible for the symmetrical distribution of the Dirac strings in the electrosphere of the proton, since they avoid that two gravitational Dirac strings attract one each other.

So, according to Quantum Ring Theory, into the hydrogen atom (and any atom) there are repulsive gravitons, and they cause the expansion of the proton's electrosphere.

Such repulsive gravity exists within the structure of the photon too. It explains why the particle and the antiparticle into the photon's structure do not annihilate one each other.
The figure bellow shows the particle and antiparticle surrounded by repulsive gravitational particles of the ether. The particle and antiparticle move with helical trajectory, in contrary directions.

8. The evolution of Physics

As one may realize, these strange conditions into the hydrogen atom, as the helical trajectory of the electron, as the expansion of the proton and electron electrospheres, as the changing of the electron's inertia with regard to the proton, and as the repulsive gravity, all together these strange conditions are responsible for an exotic behavior of the atom. That's why the physicists did never understand its paradoxical behavior.

In October 2008 the Brazillian publishing house Editora Bodigaya published my book entitled "A Evolução da Mecânica Quântica – o duelo Schrödinger versus Heisenberg". The Telesio Galilei Academy of Science intended to publish it in Europe, in 2009, having a partnership with a publishing house in London. It would be published with the title "The Missed U-Tur – the duel Schrödinger versus Heisenberg". Unfortunatelly the publishing house faced troubles due to the financial crisis in 2008, and closed its doors, so the book was not published in Europe.

The book reports to the lay man the duel between Schrödinger and Heisenberg, concerning the helical trajectory (a duel which the academicians hide from everybody, and even the most physicists do not know about such duel). Ahead is a stretch of the book, where I speak about the meaning of the Schrödinger Equation, connected to the true mechanisms of the atom's working, discovered by me in 2004:

After discovering the mechanisms and laws that rule the behavior of electrons that move in helical trajectories in the hydrogen atom, I started to think about finding the mathematical equation that describes this model. This wasn't an easy task, because it involved complex phenomena, such as the contraction of the ether, the zoom-effect, and having two potentials that attract the electron, one being the proton and the other being the center of the helical trajectory. Finally, I realized that the equation describing this complex motion of the electron in the hydrogen atom has been found already; it is the Schrödinger equation.
As starting point, Schrödinger gained inspiration from the equation Bohr obtained for the energy levels of the hydrogen atom. Without knowing the true mechanism, shown here, by which the electron interacts with the proton in the hydrogen atom, he succeeded in finding the equation that describes the electron's behavior. Schrödinger started from some properties inherent to the helical trajectory, such as the wave-particle duality expressed by the de Broglie equation λ=h/p, and, by speculating on the form of the differential equation that the wave should have, he arrived at the final form of his famous equation, which gives the energy levels of an atom when it emits photons. The Schrödinger equation involves the use of imaginary numbers. An imaginary number is the square root of a negative number and, therefore, the square of an imaginary number is a negative number. This use of an imaginary number in Schrödinger's equation reflects the complexity of the mechanisms to which the electron is subject in the hydrogen atom: the contraction of the space, the zoom-effect, the loss of inertia when the electron moves away from the proton, etc. Actually, one has to be amazed by the path followed to achieve this scientific discovery, since Schrödinger discovered his equation in the 1930's and the true meaning of his equation, which connects his equation to physical reality, was discovered only in 2004.

Other book of mine that Telesio Galilei Academy of Science intended to publish in 2009 in Europe was "The Evolution of Physics- the duel Newton versus Descartes". In this book it's shown that the evolution of Physics was occurred switching two methods of investigation: one used by Descartes, and other used by Newton. Sometimes the Newton method failed, and was replaced by the method of Descartes. For instance, the method used by Bohr, when he discovered his hydrogen model, was the method used by Descartes. Before Bohr, the physicist Voight tried to use the Newtonian method for the discovery of a model of atom, and the Newtonian method used by he has failed. So, the Newtonian method was not efficient for the discovery of the laws discovered later by Bohr. However, the success of Bohr was partial, that is, after an initial success of the Descartes method used by Bohr, the method failed, because Bohr model was not correct. He discovered some correct laws, but not all the correct laws. Then Schrödinger applied the Newtonian method again, and made some corrections in the Bohr model. However, Schrödinger also failed, because he did not discovered all the correct laws into the atom, and therefore the Newtonian method has failed again with Schrödinger. Finally, the Descartes method was used again in the development of Quantum Ring Theory, and the true laws were finally discovered.
So, the evolution of Physics occurs by the alternation of the Descartes and Newton methods, and we are now in a stage that requires the use of the Newtonian method to be applied again on the discoveries proposed in Quantum Ring Theory, which were found thanks to the use of the Descartes method. This new stage is required because the Newtonian method, used by the theorists along the 20th Century, has failed. The Newtonian method used in the 20th Century was successful for the development of technology, but the method has failed for the discovery of the true laws of Nature.
Magnetic motors and cold fusion are evidence of the failure of Newton's method.
Here is a stretch of the book:

Let us see the stages followed in the development of the model of atom.

STAGES ALREADY READY:
Stage 1 – First Voigt failed when applying the Newtonian method.
Stage 2 – After that Bohr was succeeded partially by applying the cartesian method. In this way, he discovered some fundamental mechanisms of the atom, like the emission of photons when the electron changes from one orbit to another. The cartesian method failed but opened a new path for the application of the Newtonian method starting from Bohr's discoveries.
Stage 3 – Schrödinger applied the Newtonian method again. He obtained a partial success and the method of Newton failed again, as shown by the successes of Bohr and the Dehmelt experiment.

What comes later must be anticipated by the reader. For achieving total success, there are two stages missing needed for concluding the process.

STAGES MISSING:
Stage 4 – Re-apply the cartesian method in order to discover what is missing in Quantum Mechanics, in a process similar to that used by Bohr.
Stage 5 – Re-apply the Newtonian method after stage 4, by applying the mathematical formalism for confirming the discoveries made in stage 4.

At the present moment, we are in stage 4. What is missing in Quantum Mechanics is shown in the new model of the atom proposed in Quantum Ring Theory. It is still missing stage 5.

The hydrogen model of QRT explains several paradoxes of QM. For instance, according to the Schrödinger Equation, when the electron moves in the fundamental status within the hydrogen atom, its orbit is purely radial. This means that the electron trespasses directly through into the nucleus (proton) and the oscillation occurs in any direction in space. Obviously such motion is very strange, since the electron passes into the proton's body, which is an absurd.

But look at the figure 6 what happens, by considering the model where the electron moves with helical trajectory about the proton, in the fundamental status:

The interpretation of the motion according to the Schrödinger Equation: such a motion looks like if the electron should be traveling the trajectory:

so, apparently , trespassing into the proton (the trajectory in red).

9. Cold fusion requires a New Physics

The book "Quantum Ring Theory-Foundations for Cold Fusion" was published in 2006. After its publication, the cold fusion researchers neglected the theory, because of the strategy explained ahead.
Since 1989 when it was announced by Fleischmmann and Pons, the cold fusion researchers have along the years hoped to get funds from the governments of several countries, so that to continue the development of the cold fusion technology. But a cold fusion reaction is not possible according to the foundations of Quantum Mechanics, and so a cold fusion technology would require a New Physics for its development. It would be so hard to get funds for developing a technology impossible to occur (according to the current theories), which would require a New Physics. Then the cold fusion researchers replaced the name "cold fusion" by LENR (Low Energy Nuclear Reactions), and started to claim that:
a) it actually was not cold fusion
b) there was no need of a New Physics for its explanation

Well, the cold fusion technology developed by Eng. Andrea A. Rossi and Professor Sergio Focardi is ready, and the cold fusion reactors are ready to be sold. They don't need funds from the governments for the development of the technology. Therefore there is no need to avoid the correct name for the phenomenon, which is cold fusion, because there are two facts that show that it is indeed a fusion: the transmutation of elements, and the emission of neutrons above the background of neutrons. And since it occurs under conditions of room pressure and low temperature, then of course it is cold fusion.

Besides, the experiments in the LHC are already showing that something is wrong with the current theories (from the data collected in 2010, the Supersymmetry would have to be confirmed, but the experiments have found nothing). Some physicists already are saying that LHC will show the need of a New Physics. And so, if there is need of a New Physics for the LHC, then why not a New Physics for explaining cold fusion too?

Quantum Ring Theory is a New Physics. And probably the principles proposed in the theory are those ones which will bring the explanation for cold fusion.
Perhaps the foundations proposed in Quantum Ring Theory are wrong, and then another New Physics must be found.

Nevertheless, no matter what is the New Physics that will be found (in the hypothesis that QRT is wrong), such New Physics will have to satisfy some conditions already shown in QRT. For instance, the new hydrogen model of the New Physics must be able to explain the successes of Bohr (and the existence of the centripetal acceleration on the electron).
A New Physics cannot live together with paradoxes again, as happened along the 20th Century.

Some experiments are suggesting that Quantum Ring Theory is correct. We can mention for instance the Dehmelt experiment, the Borghi and Conte-Pierlice experiments, and that recent experiment which confirmed the helical trajectory of the photon, published in July-2010.

There are many other experiments suggesting that QRT is right. Of course there is need a lot of more strong evidences so that to confirm the theory. But what will decide either the theory is correct, or wrong, is the investigation and the submission of its models to experiments.

18 hours NO SWINDLE

In the morning of February 10, the inventor and engineer Andrea Rossi initiated a new controlled experiment in Bologna, Italy, with the heat producing 'energy catalyzer' that could possibly be based on cold fusion.

With him was the physicist and researcher Giuseppe Levi from the University of Bologna, who also supervised the public demonstration in January.

Together they ran the unit for 18 hours.

"It was extremely interesting. It is clear that this was an internal test that I needed to understand what parameters must be under control during a longer test, but frankly, I wanted to see the device work for hours," Levi told Ny Teknik

"It was pretty impressive in some respects. First, the repeatability. This is the third time I've seen the device, and again it produces energy."

"The second thing is that this time we loaded the unit with hydrogen at the beginning, and then the bottle was closed. It then worked for 18 hours with the bottle closed. Quite impressive."

"I weighed container before and after charging, and including the gas we let out to empty the tube of air, the consumption of hydrogen was 0.4 grams. That's nothing!"

"Minimum power was 15 kilowatts, and that's a conservative value. I calculated it several times. At night we did a measurement and the device then worked very stable and produced 20 kilowatts."

"Now that I have seen the device work for so many hours, in my view all chemical energy sources are excluded," said Giuseppe Levi.

He explained that this time he chose to heat the water without boiling it, to avoid errors.

Initially, the temperature of the inflowing water was seven degrees Celsius and for a while the outlet temperature was 40 degrees Celsius. A flow rate of about one liter per second, equates to a peak power of 130 kilowatts. The power output was later stabilized at 15 to 20 kilowatts.

Levi explained that they did not have a peristaltic pump with sufficient flow, so instead the device was attached directly to the water tap. Therefore the flow was not constant, but by regularly noting the time and reading the input volume on a counter, he controlled the flow.

At night the counter information was recorded with a camera.

According to Levi, the input electrical power to 'ignite' the device was about 1250 watts for five to ten minutes. It was then reduced to about 80 watts, equivalent to the power consumption of the control unit.

"This time I opened the control unit (and examined the interior), as someone said that it could contain a hidden battery. And I can swear in court that the box was empty, except for the control electronics – five very simple PLCs – and it weighed about seven kilograms," said Levi.

"I have also seen inside the reactor device itself – most of the volume is isolation, and most of the weight of about 30 kg is due to lead."

He confirmed that the reactor chamber, supposedly containing nickel powder, the secret catalysts and hydrogen gas, had a volume of around one liter. The reactor chamber was the only part he could not inspect.

Levi is now planning more tests and a thorough analysis, before and after operation, of the nickel powder that the energy catalyst is loaded with.

"If I then, using the most accurate methods possible, really see changes in the nuclei, then we have new physics. There is nothing you can say about it," he stated.

Giuseppe Levi has worked with Sergio Focardi, emeritus professor at the University of Bologna and Rossi's scientific adviser since four years.

NYT: What would you tell those who doubt your independence?

"If I were an old professor with his career already done, then I would not have anything to risk. But any attempt at fraud on my part would be a terrible personal goal. What could I hope for? To have a title for ten days, and then be thrown from my own department. Because (the matter of) fraud comes up sooner or later. There is no hope for it. So if I ... well, I would be really stupid. Honestly, I would be really stupid!" said Levi.

A one megawatt installation with Rossi's 'energy catalyzer', consisting of one hundred connected 10 kilowatt devices, is supposed to be inaugurated in October in Athens, Greece, run by the newly formed Greek company Defkalion Green Technologies

Cold Fusion: Here's the Greek company building 1 MW

The Greek company that will build a heating plant of one megawatt with the Italian 'energy catalyzer' spoke about its activities and about the invention on Greek television this weekend.

The Greek company is called Defkalion Green Technologies. According to Andrea Rossi – the inventor of the 'energy catalyzer' possibly based on cold fusion – it is a newly formed consortium. Partners include companies involved in energy distribution.

On Saturday, the news about Defkalion Green Technologies was broadcasted by NET, national television in Greece (this recording of the show, now in high quality, has been uploaded by the blogger talefta.blogspot.com where there's also a summary in English).

Last week, Ny Teknik made an interview with a representative of the company.

"We represent a group with financial and industrial background having invested into Dr. Rossi's technology, and having obtained the exclusive rights to manufacture, license and distribute globally," Symeon Tsalikoglou, spokesman for Defkalion Green Technologies, wrote in an email to Ny Teknik.

He also made clear that Defkalion will not sell or distribute energy.

"Defkalion, as previously stated, will provide the market with devices producing heat, based on Dr. Rossi's invention. This heat can be utilized by CHP or micro CHP installations to produce electricity and consumable heat for different applications."

"We are neither power plant nor a utility company of any kind. As such, the one megawatt installation in Greece referred to by Dr Rossi, will consist of a combination of 3rd party technologies (such as CHP), whereby the Defkalion Energy Catalyzer will be used as the only source of power. This very installation of one megawatt in Greece will only cover the energy needs of Defkalion's factory," Symeon Tsalikoglou wrote.

Ny Teknik: How do you expect this new energy technology to develop in the future?

"This technology will not change the world energy usage over night. Essentially we are introducing a new and impressive energy source that offers cheap, clean and renewable power to the end user. We are pursuing socially responsible pricing and market penetration. We are also taking into consideration the global energy trends and fitting well within the expected gradual energy transition," Symeon Tsalikoglou wrote.

(If the 'energy catalyzer' is based on nuclear reaction between nickel and hydrogen it should not be considered as renewable. Ny Tekniks's note).

According to Andrea Rossi Defkalion will have the exclusive commercial rights to the 'energy catalyzer' in Greece, while two U.S. companies will have the corresponding rights in the United States. In the rest of the world, Defkalion has the commercial rights, but non exclusively.

"They focus on the commercial part and I on the technical development," Andrea Rossi explained.

He also made clear that his company Leonardo Corporation does not seek funding at the moment.

Nor does Defkalion Green Technologies seem to seek funding.

Defkalion Green Technologies states that it will hold a press confoerence within two months where further questions will be answered.

The reason why the European operations came to end up in Greece depends, according to Professor Sergio Focardi (Rossi's scientific adviser since four years) on contacts with Professor Christos Stremmenos who previously collaborated with Professor Focardi.

"The bond between us and Greece is a professor of Greek origin whose name is Christos Stremmenos and who has been Ambassador of Greece in Italy. He knows people in the Greek government and has also worked in this field. We have known each other for years, and when he heard about these things, he involved Greece," Sergio Focardi told Ny Teknik.

In the news bulletin on Greek television on Saturday Christos Stremmenos appeared.

"We are headed away from energy medieval ages. So it seems. It will depend on further research and the study of applications so that all levels where green energy is needed can be covered," Christos Stremmenos said

Two neighbours in the US state of Mississippi drew weapons and fired at each other as an argument over a defecating dog ran out of control.

Associated Press news agency said Jerry Blasingame, 60, has been charged with assault for shooting Terry Tehnet, 52, with a shotgun.

Mr Tehnet was angry because he thought Mr Blasingame's dog had defecated on his lawn, in a rural part of the state.

Mr Tehnet, whose injuries are not life-threatening, may also be charged.

The two men gave AP different versions of what happened.

'Meet me at the levee'

Mr Tehnet said he visited his neighbour to complain about dog "poop" on his property.

Mr Blasingame blamed him for shooting his dog the week before, Mr Tehnet said, and told him: "Just meet me at the levee and I'll shoot you down."

Mr Blasingame told AP he got his gun and drove off but Mr Tehnet did not follow so he returned to the neighbourhood.

The two men confronted one another again and each claimed the other produced a weapon first.

"He shot twice, I returned fire," said Mr Blasingame.

Mr Tehnet said Mr Blasingame opened fire first with his shotgun so he took his pistol from his car and fired back.

He said he was hit in both hands, the shoulder, chest and side by shotgun pellets, AP reported.

Washington County Chief Deputy Sheriff Billy Barber said: "Homeowners and property owners need to respect each other's property... If a dog did that in your yard, call the law. Don't take matters into your own hands."

Undercover police work revealed by phone blunder

The undercover officer spent four years taking part in the activities of the Globalise Resistance group

A blunder by an undercover policeman has revealed how the Metropolitan Police spied on the private lives of members of an anti-capitalist group.

Newsnight has obtained an audio tape in which the officer is heard discussing the personal lives of Globalise Resistance activists with other police.

Calling himself Simon Wellings, he infiltrated the group from 2001-2005.

In January, Newsnight uncovered the story of Pc Mark Kennedy, who spent years posing as a climate activist.

This tape will reinforce concerns about the operations of undercover police generated by the unmasking of Mr Kennedy.

Call diverted

The conversation involving Mr Wellings took place in 2005, and was recorded when the officer accidentally telephoned another of the group's members without knowing he had done so.

The other member failed to pick up, so the call was diverted to their answer phone, which then recorded the conversation.

In what sounds like a police station we hear the officer apparently going through photographs of Globalise Resistance demonstrators with a colleague.

Mr Wellings identifies those he can and gives personal information about them, including their sexual orientation.

At one point, for instance, he tells the other officer: "She's Hannah's girlfriend - very overt lesbian - last time I saw her, hair about that long, it was blonde, week before it was black."

Guy Taylor, from Globalise Resistance, complains that the information is "very personal and nothing to do with the political outlook of our group".

The Wellings tape also suggests that such information is fed to CO11, the Met Police unit which deploys Forward Intelligence Teams (FITs) to photograph demonstrators.

At one point the other officer is heard pressing Wellings for more names:

"Thing is, we've got the CO11s. They're like, 'Who are these people? Do you know who they are? Have you just photographed them?'"

Names to faces

Emily Apple of Fitwatch, which monitors the CO11 FITs, says similar scenes will have been going on this week in police control rooms around London as undercover police meet their handlers to identify protesters ahead of Saturday's TUC march against government cuts.

"Ahead of tomorrow's demonstration, they will be going through photographs trying to put names to faces and identify who they want to put on their spotter cards."

Ms Apple estimates that there could be as many as a dozen secret police among the marchers.

Mr Wellings was a Globalise Resistance activist from 2001 to 2005 and participated in protests everywhere from New York to Seville.

Mr Taylor says that, in retrospect, Mr Wellings "didn't have much of a back story - we never met any of his friends or his family from outside Globalise Resistance".

At the time they were not suspicious and he even became the official photographer of the group as they went to demonstrations in different countries.

But then Mr Wellings fell victim to the mistake which many mobile phone owners have made at some time - the accidental phone call.

Mr Taylor said the group then confronted him: "We just said, "You've been rumbled, it's time for you to leave the group.'"

Mr Wellings then vanished without trace.

"He had plenty of photographs of us," said Mr Taylor of their former official photographer, "but we had very few of him".

The Met Police told Newsnight on Friday that "the use of undercover officers is a valuable tactic in the fight against crime and disorder to keep people and communties safe".

Though astrology hasn't been considered a science for thousands of years, on Thursday, February 4th, 2011, the Bombay High Court in India reaffirmed that it is indeed a "science" when it dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that challenged astrology as science.

The 100 page PIL was filed by Janhit Manch, a judicial activist NGO in India, that sought action against "fake" astrologers, tantrics and practioners of Vastu shastra (for Westerners think "Feng Shui"). The document cited points such as Indira Gandhi and Charan Singh becoming prime ministers, despite opposite astrological predictions.

Representing the Union government, advocate Advait Sethna told the court:

"So far as prayer related to astrology is concerned, the Supreme Court has already considered the issue and ruled that astrology is science. The court had in 2004 also directed the universities to consider if astrology science can be added to the syllabus. The decision of the apex court is binding on this court," observed the judges. "

Advocate for Maharashtra government, Bharat Mehta too supported the stand taken by the Union government.

The Centre had in its affidavit stated that astrology is 4000 years old 'trusted science' and the same does not fall under the preview of The Drugs and Magical Remedies Act (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

"The said Act does not cover astrology and related sciences. Astrology is a trusted science and is being practiced for over 4000 years," said an affidavit filed by Dr R Ramakrishna, deputy drug controller (India), west zone.

"The said Act is aimed at prohibiting misleading advertisements relating to drugs and magic remedies. The Act does not cover and / or relate to astrology and / or allied sciences like Palmistry, Vaastu Shastra etc. In view thereof, a purported ban on practices promoting astrology and related sciences sought by the petitioner, which is a time tested science more than 4000 years old is totally misconceived and unjustifiable." The law and astrology

The first time that astrologers and Astrology appeared in the law any place was in England in the 16th Century.

The British enforced the British Vagrancy Act which was supposedly focused on protecting people from gypsies, but that act marked the first unfortunate identification of astrologers with "fortune-telling" and the illegality of the practice took root .

"In that act, it became illegal to perform any form of fortune telling using cards, tea leaves, crystal balls and, unfortunately, the movement of the heavenly bodies.

"Now, the people that were involved were not Astrologers. They were gypsies and fortune tellers, and that's all they were, without any real credentials. There was no understanding on their part of the true meaning of the horoscope, and the fortunes they told were pure guess. In the British Vagrancy Act, the word "Astrologer" and "horoscope reader" appeared and we had the first statement that it was illegal to tell fortunes by horoscopes. Unfortunately, the law in England was followed in the United States and the colonies adopted the English law applying to vagrants and subsequently many states did, using the same language." From then on, it was all downhill for astrologers.

Though there were never any federal laws which Congress has enacted (Senate and House of Representatives), or provisions in the United States Constitution that mentioned Astrology or astrologers, there are numerous state and community laws and restrictions on astrologers and the practice of Astrology.

"The laws astrologers object to include bonding requirements of up to $10,000, business license fees that range from $300 per year to as much as $100 per day, and even total prohibitions on the practice of astrology for a fee. Labeled "fortune-telling," and lumped in with all manner of archaic "occult arts" and metaphysical practices — as well as the complete pantheon of New Age philosophies — astrological practice is restricted by many cities in most states in this "Land of the Free." The Case of Evangeline Adams

One of the most famous legal cases against an astrologer was the New York District Attorney's office against Evangeline Adams in 1914, who was not only one of the most accomplished astrologers of that time but also billionaire J.P Morgan's personal astrologer (famous for telling him "not to board the Titanic" among her many financial and business directives).

Evangeline Adam's counsel stated:

"Astrology is the science which describes the influence of the heavenly bodies upon mundane affairs and upon human character and life. It is a mathematical or exact science as it is based upon astronomy which describes the heavenly bodies and explains their motions, etc. It is an applied science in that it takes the established principles of astronomy as its guide in delineating human character, and all its judgments are based on mathematic calculations. It is an empirical science, because its deductions are based upon accurate data that have been gathered for thousands of years. Astrology is the oldest science in existence. It is not only pre-historic but pre-traditional, and must not be classed with fortune telling, or any of the many forms of demonology as practiced in ancient and modern times. Astrology is the science of the effects of the Solar Currents, on the living things of our earth, especially on human life. The earth in revolving around the sun passes through twelve different currents of Solar Fluid which also have twelve distinct parts, thus causing the great diversity in human life."

The Judge stated:

The defendant has given ample proof that she is a woman of learning and culture, and one who is very well versed in astronomy and other sciences. Her chart here, as made out, may be verified, as she states, by those who may be disputatious on the subject of its accuracy in the books and records of astronomers for years. And when the defendant stated to the prosecutrix that these planets and their relative positions indicated this or that, and this or that ought to happen, if the signs meant anything, with the distinct understanding had between them that the defendant was giving no assurance that this or that eventually would take place, I say she violated no law."

It is to be admitted that a certain class of fortune-tellers may be honest in their purposes and honestly believe the things they say to be true. There are people in this world who claim with earnestness that they have superhuman powers and that their specific means of reading the future are reliable; yet the law is not concerned so much with the good faith of the party pretending to possess this ability, as it is concerned with dealing in a human way with the things that are within human knowledge only. Common experience teaches many things; in fact, the science is predicated upon the fact developed in the affairs of the world as men have experienced them. No doubt many many years ago for anyone to have attempted to say that the conformation of the head of that the physiognomy of a creature determined the character of the individual and that such and such a type would someday turn out to be a criminal would have been guilty of fortune telling. But the history of specific cases has furnished us with a working basis. For these new theories that nowadays seem to be accepted by noted criminologists and the public in general.

"I am satisfied that the defendant has not pretended to tell fortunes, and she is accordingly acquitted."

Things haven't changed much since 1914; AFAN (Association for Astrological Networking) has made some strides in changing laws that restrict the practice of Astrology. A list of state-by-state actions concerning the practice of astrology can be found on their website as well as a legal information kit.

Scientific or not, it might be well to ponder the late Professor of Architecture, Mimi Lobell of the Pratt Institute's words:

"The reason for astrology's popularity is that it offers people what science does not; a psychologically meaningful link between the individual and the cosmos. To dismiss astrology, as superstition shows a lack of understanding of the primordial psychological need for a meaningful relationship with the cosmos ... It is a call for cognitive frames which describe not only the order of the universe, but also give the individual a sublime sense of participation in that order."

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking action against bogus astrologers, tantriks, vaastu shastra practitioners and the like on Thursday.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice S J Vajifdar was hearing a PIL filed by the NGO Janhit Manch questioning the validity of predictions by well-known astrologers and lesser known babas.

"So far as prayer related to astrology is concerned, the Supreme Court has already considered the issue and ruled that astrology is a science. The Court had in 2004 also directed the universities to consider if astrology science can be added to the syllabus. The decision of the apex court is binding on this court," observed the judges.

The judges also took on record an affidavit submitted by the Union government. The Centre had in its affidavit stated that astrology is a 4000-year-old 'trusted science' and the same does not fall under the purview of The Drugs and Magical Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. "The said Act does not cover astrology and related sciences. Astrology is a trusted science and is being practised for over 4,000 years," said an affidavit filed by Dr R Ramakrishna, deputy drug contoller ( India), west zone.

The more than 100-page petition pointed to several cases including that of Indira Gandhi and Charan Singh becoming prime ministers, despite predictions to the contrary.

Representing the Union government, advocate Advait Sethna told the court that even the SC accepted that astrology was a science and many universities had included it as a subject. Advocate for Maharashtra government, Bharat Mehta too supported the stand taken by the Centre. Mehta submitted an affidavit filed by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) which said necessary action is being taken against the guilty under the Drugs and Magical Remedies Act.

SHRINES are make-belief

Janhit Manch, an NGO, had moved the high court asking for illegal shrines to be demolished as many of them obstructed development work. The NGO felt the structures were an obstruction to the public. So, in 2002, the NGO went to court asking for their demolition.

One year later (in 2003), the court ordered that all illegal shrines like temples, mosques or churches, be demolished. Following the court order the civic body submitted an affidavit to the court saying it had demolished about 1,100 shrines.

Janhit Manch, a leading judicial activist NGO of the country, founded by Bhagvanji Raiyani in 2002, has filed about 55 Public Interest Litigations in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court.

India is the largest democracy in the world and its citizens are enjoying the fruits of democracy since over six decades. Likewise the people also suffer due to mismanagement of the country by governments at the centre and states as well as local self governments in the rural and urban areas.

Environment and ecology are under severe threat, superstition is rampant, number of illiterates are rising year after year, child labour is widespread, malnutrition is common, family welfare programmes are failing against rising population, slum occupants and homeless are on the rise, people live in dirt and filth, civic services are not commensurate with the amount spent, problems of crimilisation of politics, econmics and society, corruption at all levels, child marriages, rapes, domestic violence, dowry deaths, human rights violations, bandhs, strikes, labour problems, law productivities, recession, bank frauds and financial scams, inadequate transport facilities and infrastructures, depleting natural resources and so on and so forth.

Some of the Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) doing their bit to salvage the deteriorating conditions of the country, work as watchdog agencies and catalysts between authorities and public.

Janhit Manch, established in 2002 as a nonpolitical forum, aims at becoming one of the leading NGOs of the country. The Manch will use all its resources at its command with the co-operation of all the three wings of the governance i.e. Executive, Legislature and Judiciary in furtherence of its mission to serve the masses. The Manch does not take up the personal and individul matters for resolutions except giving necessary advice, but takes up the issues concerning the large segment and the common interest of the society and the country. It is in the forefront in the judicial activitism and goes on filing PILs (Public Interest Litigations) in the courts, taking up issues at local, state and central government level.

The Manch has started publishing its quarterly newsletter on its activities from July 2007 for its members and patrons and will regularly publish the same every three months.

It has been estimated that Sri Satya Sai Baba, India's biggest spiritual leader, has up to 30 million devotees around the world.

But increasing numbers of former followers are alleging he has sexually abused them or their families.

Swamis, otherwise known as yogis or gurus, are the holy men of India, and part of ancient tradition.

Sai Baba, is based in Puttaparthi, near Bangalore in southern India. His distinctive 1960s orange robes and Afro hairstyle make him instantly recognisable.

This is a private farm which is owned and set up by Alan Gibbs, one of NZ's richest, influential and more controversial men.

The Farm is a 1,000 acre Sculpture Park on SH16 about 13 kms north of Kaukapakapa bordering the Kaipara Harbour. It features priceless works by national and internationally renowned artists. The site-specific art works interact strongly with the lanscape and the ever-changing light, creating a lasting impression on all visitors to The Farm. In addition, the exotic animals of the farm, including giraffes, zebras, water buffalo, and yaks, create living sculptures...and Alan?s Aquada car ? well, that?s a technological sculpture in a class of its own!

"After just seventeen years Gibbs' collection includes major, and in many cases the largest works by Andy Goldsworthy, Anish Kapoor, Bill Culbert, Chris Booth, Daniel Buren, Eric Orr, George Rickey, Graham Bennett, Kenneth Snelson, Len Lye, Leon van den Eijkel, Marijke de Goey, Neil Dawson, Peter Nicholls, Peter Roche, Ralph Hotere, Richard Serra, Richard Thompson, Russell Moses, Sol LeWitt and Tony Oursler.

Collected at a rate of about one a year (though many take 3-5 years to develop) all bar two of the sculptures are unique and site specific.
While The Farm cannot yet rival the depth of Storm King, Gibbs' artists and works compare well.

In some cases they surpass. For instance the Serra, Buren and large Rickey are more significant works than their New York counterparts.

A sample fun weekend activity at the Farm: sit inside the caged ball at the top of the world's largest Tesla coil while several million volts of electricity spin around you before they burst into 40-foot-long lightning bolts. "It'll knock your socks off," Gibbs told me a month later, his voice resonating like a pistol shot over the phone. "We've all been inside the damn thing: It's scary as hell."

Electrum is a sculpture that employs lightning as the major component. Real lightning , which is very rarely seen up close, has the ability to focus and clear the mind. The work stands 38 feet tall and is essentially a column with a sphere on the top. Concealed within the sculpture is a 130,000 watt Tesla Coil. The Tesla Coil is the largest of its kind in the world. Lightning discharges up to fifty feet in length emanate in all directions from the top of the sphere.

The Electrum project is a collaboration between Greg Leyh, high voltage engineer from Lightning on Demand (LOD) in San Francisco, and Eric Orr, sculptor. Leyh represents the scientific aspect that has allowed Orr to manifest a work of art that is singular in its power to transform the moment. Orr has combined primary materials in a number of his water and fire sculptures. The Electrum sculpture is an evolution of Orr's work towards absolute simplicity. The sculpture has the sense of pure industrial strength art. The viewer is bathed in the raw force of nature.

Electrum was commissioned by a prominent New Zealand art patron. The work was installed on his farm in April 1998 outside of Auckland. Pictures of the contruction, testing and installation effort are available in the photo galleries below.

Windows XP has built-in faxing capability. That's right, with XP all that's required to set up faxing is a good old-fashioned phone line and a modem. Faxing in XP can be installed from the Control Panel using the "Add Windows Components" option. The component is called Fax Services.

Once installed, the Fax Configuration Wizard provides an easy step-by-step interface that will assist in setting up a fax cover page, enabling send as well as receive and setting up the fax header information (also known as Transmitting Subscriber Identification or TSID). To start the Fax Configuration Wizard, click Start / All Programs / Accessories / Communications / Fax, then click Fax Console.

In most cases, you can fax directly from the application that created the document. Select File / Print, then under Select Printer, click Fax instead of a regular printer. The Send Fax Wizard will appear, prompting you for the recipient's fax number, and the cover page info.

So what what about incoming faxes? In the Fax Configuration Wizard, you have the option to automatically answer, or answer manually. If you choose to automatically receive faxes, your fax modem will answer the fax line after the specified number of rings, receive the incoming fax, and store it in the Fax Console. If you choose to manually answer fax calls, you'll need to open the Fax Console, click File, then click Receive a fax now. The Fax Monitor will appear and waits for incoming faxes. But the light pillars Mike Hollingshead saw last night near a corn mill in Nebraska were decidely uncommon. "They had V-shaped tops," he explains, "and some of the Vs were nested." Here is what he saw:

"These light pillars are not just rare, they are exceptional!" declares atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley. "Ordinary pillars are produced by plate-shaped ice crystals roughly half way between you and the light source. These are different. Their rarely seen flared tops show that they were made by column-shaped crystals drifting slowly downwards and aligned horizontal by air resistance."

"The flares are a form of the upper tangent arcs that we sometimes see in daytime halo displays," he continues. "But even more exotic, some flares have a second one nested within them! Some ice crystal columns do not rotate but instead keep two of their prism faces improbably horizontal to give us the very uncommon Parry arcs of solar halo displays. The nested flares here are amazing and probably the light halo equivalent of Parry arcs."

Columns of light apparently beaming directly upwards from unshielded (and wastefully polluting) lights are sometimes visible during very cold weather. Plate shaped ice crystals, normally only present in high clouds, float in the air close to the ground and their horizontal facets reflect light back downwards.

The pillars are not physically over the lights or anywhere else in space for that matter ~ like all halos they are purely the collected light beams from all the millions of crystals which just happen to be reflecting light towards your eyes or camera.

Artificial light pillars can be much taller than their natural counterparts because rays from the lights are not parallel and plate crystals with small tilts can still reflect them downwards. The crystals producing the pillars are roughly halfway between you and the lights.

When ice crystals float in the air around you, pillars (and other halos) can even be seen around streetlights a few metres away.

Low-Power FM Radio to Gain Space on the Dial

OPELOUSAS, La. — When John Freeman turned on his car radio one recent
day and tuned to KOCZ, the voice he heard was a 2-year-old girl's.

It belonged to Nyla Belton, the daughter of the afternoon D.J., Craig
Belton. She's better known on the air as "D.J. Scribble" and sometimes
speaks up between songs.

Mr. Freeman, the station's executive director, chuckled and pointed to
the radio. "That's what's special about low-power FM," he said.

KOCZ's signal is a mere 100 watts, so low that its reach is only 10 to
15 miles. Mr. Freeman cannot even tune in from his home. But the
station has become an unlikely lifeline in this town of 22,000,
helping promote local artists and church events in ways that
commercial stations either cannot or will not.

Advocates for low-power FM, or LPFM, as it is called, say the stations
are a slight corrective to the consolidation of commercial radio. Soon
there will be more: this month President Obama signed the Local
Community Radio Act, which repeals restrictions on such stations and
allows the Federal Communications Commission to give out more 100-watt
licenses.

Freeing space on the radio dial for local voices might seem a moot
point in an age when anyone can start an Internet radio station. But
the appropriation of the public airwaves remains a vital and, for
some, very emotional issue.

A majority of Americans "still get their news and culture over the
broadcast dial," said Hannah Sassaman, a longtime advocate of
community radio. For Ms. Sassaman and others, this month's bill
signing was the culmination of 10 years of lobbying for more access to
the airwaves. "I care about this because I have seen these stations
light people up and cause political coverage, local music and
community organizing to happen around the country and the world," Ms.
Sassaman said.

KOCZ, for instance, helped to bring zydeco music back to the radio
dial in this part of Louisiana. Zydeco, a potent blend of Cajun,
rhythm and blues and, among a younger generation, hip-hop, often
features accordion and washboard and is a passion of people in the
region. It is played on KOCZ every day between 6 and 8 p.m.

"It helps promote that culture — and that's something that's very
significant for the African-American community here," said Mr.
Freeman, who slyly added that he thought commercial stations had
started playing more zydeco since KOCZ started broadcasting in 2002.
"They know that we make them better," he said.

Mr. Freeman describes KOCZ as "a mission." A retired executive for
Bell South, he calls himself a "corporate guy" who became a convert to
low-power radio, thanks to Ms. Sassaman and other community
organizers. Low-power stations are designated for noncommercial uses,
so many are licensed to churches and schools. KOCZ is licensed to the
Southern Development Foundation, a civil rights group that grants
scholarships and runs a business incubator but has fallen on hard
times. The foundation treats the station as a 24-hour form of
community outreach.

Shows are hosted by about 20 volunteers like Mr. Belton, who plays R&B
and hip-hop on weekday afternoons, and Lena Charles, the chairwoman of
the foundation board, who hosts a weekend talk show and held candidate
forums for the local elections last year.

"Politically, some people don't talk to other people," Ms. Charles
said. "But we talk to everybody. We're a bridge sometimes."

Each show depends on the underwriting of local sponsors like funeral
homes and beauty salons. "Without them, we'd be pretty much shut
down," Mr. Freeman said. Recently three microphones at KOCZ were out
of order, forcing guests to share the one remaining mike with the
host.

Now low-power stations are few and far between and exist mostly in
rural areas, squeezed in among the commercial stations. It isn't
always comfortable. KOCZ has been moved around the dial by the Federal
Communications Commission a number of times, mirroring the larger
struggle to gain more space for small stations.

The community radio act was passed during the lame-duck session of
Congress last month. After President Obama signed the act, Julius
Genachowski, the chairman of the F.C.C., called it a "big win" for
radio listeners.

"Low-power FM stations are small, but they make a giant contribution
to local community programming," he said in a statement. Notably, the
act may make it possible for some low-power outlets to sprout up in
urban areas, where they could reach more listeners than a station like
KOCZ does. Now it is up to the F.C.C. to start accepting applications
for new licenses.

The station in Opelousas has led Mr. Freeman to conclude that bigger
is not always better. For KOCZ, smaller is better, because smaller
means more local.

One day last year when Mr. Belton was on the air, a woman walked into
the station (located in an otherwise unremarkable white-paneled house
in the middle of town) and asked for an announcement to be broadcast
about her lost dog.

"She was able to get her dog back the next day," said Helen Pickney,
the station manager, still marveling at the story.

KOCZ doesn't know how many listeners it has, since it is too small to
be rated. Mr. Freeman instead cites a different sort of rating: the
waiting list for people who want to host a show. There are more than
20 on the list, he said — enough to start a second station.

In 2007 Libsker worked on a feature documentary film called Stalags. During the early 1960s in Israel and the Adolf Eichmann trial "Stalags" were pornographic booklet describing masochistic brutal sex relationship between Nazi women wardens and concentration camp prisoners. Stalags(in Deutsch: "POW camp") were pocket books whose stories revealed lusty female SS officers sexually abusing camp prisoners.
During the 1960s, parallel to the Eichmann trial, sales of this pornographic literature broke all records in Israel as hundreds of thousands of copies were sold at kiosks.

The popularity of the Stalags only declined after a much-reported trial, in which their authors were accused of distributing anti-Semitic pornography.
The film examines this notorious phenomenon, exposing the creators of this literary genre for the first time.

Moreover it posits that pornographic aspects appears in canonic Holocaust literature and continue to be spreaded as part of the representation of the Holocaust in Israel, in schools, books and trips to Auschwitz.

Fictitious memory

Not only did these books break taboos relating to pornography in Hebrew fiction - they broke taboos that had existed with regard to the literary treatment of the Holocaust, according to Eshed.

A few years ago, a book in a Tel Aviv used-book store caught the eye of documentary filmmaker Ari Libsker. The book, written in Hebrew, featured hard-core pornography, but what attracted his attention was its setting and the identity of its characters. The story tells of a Nazi prison camp commanded by women, and includes descriptions of their abuse of prisoners of war - some of them sexual.

That same bookstore visit sparked Libsker's interest in "stalagim," pornographic books published in Israel during the 1960s that describe sadistic relations between beautiful Nazi women, who commanded Third Reich prison camps, and their tortured prisoners. In these books, the prisoners are usually American and British, rather than Jewish. Libsker adds that in the books' narratives, the protagonist is usually a prisoner who describes the humiliation, torture and rape he experiences in the camp.

His interest in this subject led Libsker to Eli Eshed, a researcher of popular Israeli culture and pulp literature, who examined the "stalag" phenomenon. In an article Eshed published in the Ha'ayal Hakoreh online publication in 2001, he cited dozens of titles belonging to this genre, which were released in Israel between 1961 and 1964. The first publication of the series, "Stalag 13," was printed seven times and sold a total of 25,000 copies.

Not only did these books break taboos relating to pornography in Hebrew fiction - they broke taboos that had existed with regard to the literary treatment of the Holocaust, according to Eshed.

"It is no accident that 'stalagim' began to appear in 1961, in the shadow of the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem," Eshed writes. "The bitter and widely publicized testimony gave rise to a renewed public discourse on the Holocaust."

It was the exposure to this literary genre that led to Libsker's decision to make a documentary film to examine the phenomenon.

Filming, which began a year ago, mainly focuses on interviews with people who wrote these books under pseudonyms, and their readers. "The film will expose the inventor of this genre, who was interviewed for the first time," Libsker says.

Two weeks ago, Libsker interviewed Uri Avnery, editor of the now defunct Haolam Hazeh weekly news magazine that devoted the back pages of two editions to "stalagim." Avnery also referred to the Eichmann trial as a turning point in Israel's approach to the Holocaust. He believes the "stalagim" developed as a sado-masochistic, public response to the horrors described in the trial.

"The film attempts to identify the backdrop to which this fiction was created, and the reason it became so popular," Libsker says. "It also examines how these books influenced the generation that read them - people now in their 50s and 60s - and how the books shaped their memory." He maintains that for many "stalag" readers, the boundaries between fact and fiction became blurred. "Although these are fictional books, members of that generation absorbed the 'stalagim' as part of the collective memory of the Holocaust," he says.

Libsker says it was hard to find the books' writers and to persuade them to grant interviews for the film. Readers were also reluctant to expose their reading habits on camera.

According to Libsker, many find the subject intimidating and some interviewees demanded that he conceal their identities on film. In some scenes, he asked readers to read passages from the books aloud, as he documented their responses to the text. He says many of them remembered the books as soft pornography and were surprised by the extremely graphic details of sexual abuse (that include the amputation of genitalia, for example).

The years that passed not only softened the memory of the pornographic details in the readers' minds. According to Libsker, many switched the roles and sexes of the characters: Readers, who have matured since reading these books, often remember them as stories about Nazi men raping and torturing Jewish women, rather than the opposite.

The filming of the documentary, temporarily entitled "Stalagim," will be completed in the coming days. Barak Heiman co-produced the movie with Libsker and the film was funded by the "Yes Doco" television channel and the New Fund for Film and Television in Israel.

BERLIN (AFP) – A prize-winning lifelike sculpture of a squatting policewoman urinating has whipped up a storm of protest in Germany, where it went on prominent display last week.

The work entitled "Petra" by 27-year-old German sculptor Marcel Walldorf is made of silicone and metal and has pitted public officials against art world aficionados in the debate over what is acceptable in the name of high culture.

It depicts a young female police officer in full riot gear crouching to pee, with exposed buttocks and a small gelatin "puddle" affixed to the floor of the gallery at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, eastern Germany.

The work entitled "Petra" was completed one year ago and has captured a 1,000-euro (1,328-dollar) prize by the prestigious Leinemann Foundation for fine arts.

"It shows very well the difference between the public sphere and the private sphere," the jury said.

But Saxony interior minister Markus Ulbig, who is responsible for the state's security services, told the German press he was "shocked" by the sculpture, which he branded "an insult to police officers."

The GdP police union also blasted the piece, saying it "breached the limits of artistic freedom."

"There have of course been letters of protest, particularly addressed to the artist," a spokeswoman for the Academy of Fine Arts, Andrea Weippert, told AFP.

But she insisted that the public response had been "overwhelmingly positive".

"People who visit the show are not offended," she said.

She said she was surprised by the attention given to the display of "Petra" in Dresden as it had already been featured in smaller shows in the cities of Berlin and Leipzig.

"The artist is exploring a taboo zone. 'Petra' is not a provocation," she said. "It is an observation of society."

This is the promise of new research in England, where Â£4-million ($6.5m) has been given to the UK Clinical Research Collaboration to develop this disposable tech. You donâ™t have to actually urinate on your phone (unless it is an old pre-Android Motorola handset, in which case you might want to anyway). Instead, you will put a few drops of urine or saliva onto a computer chip which you will then plug into the phone. This laboratory-on-a-chip then chugs into action, analyzing the sample and giving a diagnosis within a few minutes.

The actual details of the chips are still undisclosed, but they will be cheap. The idea is to sell them in vending machines in the same places you would buy condoms, for prices as low as 50p to Â£1 (80-cents to $1.60), making self-testing into an easy and discreet affair, encouraging those who would normally avoid doctors to check themselves out. The chips would be âœabout the size of a USB chip,â according to the Guardian, and plug straight into the phone or PC. This makes it likely that it would hook-up via micro-USB, something compatible with pretty much everything except the iPhone.

According to the project chief, Dr Tariq Sadiq, âœBritain is one of the worst [countries] in western Europe for teenage pregnancy and STIs (sexually transmitted infections).â As a Brit myself, I can confirm this: When not taking drugs or roaming the dismal streets looking for people to stab, young Britons like nothing more than drunken, dangerous sex. Targeting the tech-savvy, cellphone-loving generation with these tests seems a very smart thing to do.

Mobile phones and computers will soon be able to diagnose sexually transmitted diseases under innovative plans to cut the UK's rising rate of herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea among young people.

Doctors and technology experts are developing small devices, similar to pregnancy testing kits, that will tell someone quickly and privately if they have caught an infection through sexual contact.

People who suspect they have been infected will be able to put urine or saliva on to a computer chip about the size of a USB chip, plug it into their phone or computer and receive a diagnosis within minutes, telling them which, if any, sexually transmitted infection (STI) they have. Seven funders, including the Medical Research Council, have put Â£4m into developing the technology via a forum called the UK Clinical Research Collaboration.

Sexual health experts hope it will help reduce the growing number of STIs, which have increased for the last decade and reached a record 482,696 last year. Two-thirds of women reporting a new STI were under 25, as were more than half of men.

The self-testing devices are aimed at technology-savvy young people. Public health experts are concerned that, although most STIs occur among that age group, many are too embarrassed to visit a GP or a genito-urinary medicine clinic to get tested and therefore continue to suffer and potentially pass the disease on. Doctors hope that the ability to obtain a private, confidential diagnosis will overcome their widespread reluctance to take a test.

The developers of the rapid testing devices expect them to be sold for as little as 50p or Â£1 each in vending machines in nightclubs, pharmacies and in supermarkets, as condoms are. They are drawing on nanotechnology and microfluidics, the creation of miniaturised laboratories.

"Your mobile phone can be your mobile doctor. It diagnoses whether you've got one of a range of STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea and tells you where to go next to get treatment," said Dr Tariq Sadiq, a senior lecturer and consultant physician in sexual health and HIV at St George's, University of London, who is leading the project. "We need to tackle the rising epidemic of STIs, which have been going up and up and up. Britain is one of the worst [countries] in western Europe for teenage pregnancy and STIs. That there's a major embarrassment factor here, especially among young people, makes the situation worse." Some people do not get tested because they choose to do nothing about their symptoms, such as an itch or discharge, or dislike clinics' waiting lists or opening times. With some STIs people can remain infectious, even when the initial symptoms have disappeared.

Self-testing could lead to quicker diagnosis, fewer STIs and patients gaining greater control of their sexual health, as well as the ability to alert recent sexual partners, he added.

Sadiq is head of the Electronic Self-testing Instruments for Sexually Transmitted Infections consortium, which includes experts in microbiology, public health, telecommunications and micro-engineering from medical research institutions, the NHS and industry. The NHS's technology adoption centre, the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence and mobile phone operators, including 02, are also involved.

Doctors said the devices could help by removing the need to meet a health professional. "Some people may find going into a doctor's surgery to be tested an intimidating experience, so it's crucial that we find new ways to engage with people," said Dr Marion Henderson, from the MRC's social and public health sciences unit. Some STIs do not always display symptoms, she added. "This is important, particularly for women, as it can lead to future painful pelvic inflammatory disease and even infertility, both of which could be avoided with testing and appropriate treatment."

Prof Noel Gill, head of HIV and STIs at the Health Protection Agency, the government agency that monitors infections and advises on containment strategies, said: "HPA surveillance has shown that the impact of STIs is greatest among young people and we hope that the application of new technology will help to reduce transmission of infection in this age group.

"This is an exciting research and development consortium which will develop new technologies that both improve and expand testing for STIs. As innovations become available, the HPA will co-ordinate large-scale evaluations within a network of collaborating STI clinics," Gill added.

STDs: the facts
A total of 482,696 new cases of sexually transmitted infection were recorded across the UK in 2009, some 12,000 more than in 2008. Of those, 231,433 were in women (up 4%) and 249,605 in men (up 1%).

â¢ Two-thirds of last year's new STI diagnoses in women were among under-25s. For example, 88% of the 127,741 cases of chlamydia, 73% of the 5,434 cases of gonorrhoea and 66% of the 42,095 cases of genital warts among women occurred in that age group.

â¢ Among men, slightly more than half of all the new STIs were in under-25s, including 69% of the 84,863 cases of male chlamydia, 47% of the 49,105 cases of genital warts and 41% of the 11,541 cases of gonorrhoea.
